hi everyone=
i am looking for advice on dehydration and healing. i was in my traditional fall flare since november and was on the dreaded pred. on 12/30 i fell and fractured my left foot and shattered my right ankle. they had to do emergency surgery to save my right foot and i now have a tremendous amount of hardware replacing the ankle joint. i slowly weaned myself off the pred about a month ago. since then the diarrhea and pain has returned as well as vomitting with the diarrhea. when my intestines spasm so does my stomach. i have had two instances of home iv hydration but the last time- last week- the nurses couldnt get my veins so i ended up in the er for 12 hrs. while i was there i did get three bags of fluid but was told that i really wasnt that bad and didnt truly need it as my tongue and lips werent split and my eyes werent sunken. this is despite the fact that i had a hard time with putting my sentences together. so here is my first dilemma- it is less than a week and i am dehydrated again and i dont know what to do. my home nurse is contacting my gastro to discuss a picc line as my veins are so bad and she isnt confident that she can get a home line in. i also cant easily get around due to the broken feet. any advise on how to deal with and overcome the dehydration?
second question- i am healing very very slowly from the breaks and am looking at another 8 wks on top of the current 9 wks before i can walk again.. as anyone had broken bones or trauma occur when they were in a flare and how did it affect you? is there anything else i can be doing?

I don't have much advise, just wanted to tell you I hope they do agree with a picc line, at least then you don't have to worry about being a pincushion.

Are you able to keep liquids down? Could you drink Gatorade?

Hope things get better for you! Sounds like you've been through a lot lately.

I have not experienced breaking bones during a flare, but I just wanted to say that I hope they give you a picc line -- it seems like the most rational solution given your immobility.
