well, i am back.  just got the confirmation that i have salmonella poisoning.  but at least i have an answer to why i have been in HELL.

has anyone else had this?  from what i am reading it can be hard on us immune suppressed peoples and can cause further complications.  i was put on a course of cipro for the next week.  just looking for tips, suggestions, how long i can expect to be sick, etc.

i guess that will teach me to not eat out so much :'(  well, the sketchy places at least!  *cough cough* chinese buffet *cough*

Hey steph - sorry you're dealing with this, but I'm glad you figured it out!

I had salmonella poisoning from a major pizza chain once. I battled it on my own for about 4 days, but ended up so dehydrated that I checked myself into the hospital. After 3 days of IV fluid, it was like it never happened. I was fine. It didn't even cause a "flare" per say, other than that week or so of actual bacterial hell.

So - my advice - do whatever you have to do to stay hydrated. If you dehydrate - you will drag out the agony for even longer.

Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon!

No antibiotics for me. They usually make things worse for my gut, but I know some people have been helped through similar bouts with them. If you're not already, I would definitely get a good probiotic to restore the "good" gut bacteria that the Cipro is going to kill off.

If you're hydrated, then you are WAY ahead of the game. The achyness could be residual from the d and salmonella, but it may also be the Cipro itself causing it. I was always put on Cipro and Flagyl at the same time if I was put on antibiotics, and one or the other of them made me feel so achy! Just a thought.

I hope you're through the worst of it!

thanks for the advice, tomorrow i am going to look into the probiotics. i've been meaning to because i heard they have great benefits and this gives me a great reason to finally get off my duff and get it done.

i think i am through the worst. my stomach isn't so happy i have introduced some solid foods but it's nothing like it was before.

If it is freakishly abnormal pain, I would blame the cipro. But then, I like to blame pills whenever possible because I am bigger than them. It's the bully in me I guess.

How many more days do you have to go on the Cipro? Are your GI symptoms any better at least? Meanwhile, kitty snuggle time is good. I hope you get SOME kind of a break soon!

I had food poisoning one time from a chain restaurant. Don't know if it was Salmonella but I did check myself into the hospital.

you crack me up!!  i am only on cipro for a week and i started it thursday.  i think i have to go back for more stool studies to make sure it's gone.  my guts are making noises that i can only describe as sounding like regan from the exorcist.  possessed regan of course, not sweet regan.  i am eating bits of solid food but not much at a time.  still having watery d but i can at least make it to the bathroom now.  that's always an improvement :P  my major pain complaint is my head.  but that started before the cipro.  still achy today but it doesn't seem as bad?  i rested a lot yesterday and it looks like i will be doing the same today even though i am bored out of my tree!!

Hi Stepahanie,
I had Salmonella last year and it was HELL! It took a long time (2 months) for me to get diagnosed, because my doctor assumed it was an exacerbation of my Crohn's and put me on high doses of steroids which made everything worse. I even went to U of Michigan hospital, and they didn't figure it out! I lost about 25 pounds in the process! The Cipro did work, but I needed a couple of rounds of it. After the main infection seemed to clear, I still had a lot of pain, lack of appetite, etc. The doc called it "post infectious IBS" I tried the VSL #3 probiotics, but it did'nt help much. It did get better, but it took me about 8 months. Hopefully you caught it earlier, so you will get better faster. I hope you feel better soon!
