Hi folks,

This year I was given two different drugs to try to combat the severe D for the current severe Crohn's flareup I'm experiencing.

My general physician prescribed Donnatol (in elixir form) and Lomotil.  Neither of them did anything to decrease the amount, frequency, or severity of my D.

I did a bit of research and found that the drugs are intended more for IBS sufferers than Crohn's patients.  Has anyone been prescribed and had success with either of these drugs?  If so, do you happen to know what dose was effective?

I'm scheduled on 3/25 to see my GI for the first time since my Crohn's diagnosis in 2004.  Hopefully he can isolate a drug that will be more effective.

I have CD and am taking both Donnatal and Lomotil. I'm also taking DTO (distilled tincture of opium).  The DTO and Lomotil were prescribed to help slow things down.  I have an ileostomy and have short bowel syndrome, so almost anything I eat goes right through me. The thinking is that if we slow things down I might be able to retain some of the nutrients.  The drugs do help.  The Donnatal was prescribed more recently to help reduce the pain; it is an antispasmodic.

I don't agree that these drugs are more for IBS than Crohns, but I'm not a professional. What doses are you taking? I take 2 tsp. of Donnatol as needed for pain. I take 2 Lomotil tablets four times a day, and the DTO is 30 drops 4 times a day.

Have you tried any of the other CD drugs like Imuran, Humira or Remicade?

a/k/a Laurie. Living with Crohns since 1968. Too many surgeries to count. Total colectomy with ileostomy. Took Imuran for many years, but recent flares have required Humira.

Thank you very much for your reply!

My dosage 1 tsp. of Donnatal as needed, no more than 4 tsp. per day.  However, this dosage was prescribed by my general physician when I was not in the midst of a flareup.  I didn't have a problem with the drug until the fourth time I took it: a few hours after taking it, when its effect was wearing off, I felt like all of my nerve endings were humming and I was going to jump out of my skin (that's the only way I can describe it).

As far as the Lomotil, my doc simply said to take one every time I have watery/loose stools.  So during the kind of flareup I'm currently having, I've been taking about two per hour, lol.

I'm just coming off of a Prednisone regime and will discuss other Crohn's meds when I meet with my GI next week.  I'm concerned about taking immuno-suppressant drugs like the ones you mentioned since I work at a university...the number of bugs/viruses/cold that circulate through the student body is downright impressive.  :-)  That being said, I'm considering looking for a new job since the stress levels there are definitely not 'helping' my Crohn's; a new position in an environment where I come into contact with far fewer people would also be conducive to taking the appropriate medications.

My GI prescribed me Lomotil.  I take one before every meal, and one right before bed.  It seems like sometimes it helps, and other times I might as well have not even taken it.

Current Meds: Imuran 50mg, Vitamin B12 (injection), D, and C tablets. Fish Oil Tablets, Cats Claw, Slippery Elm, and Reishi.
