ewwwwwwwwwwwwww! gross!! I was told (at a hospital) that sterility doesn't matter in the gut . . . BUT (no pun intended) I would think that THOSE germs would be the ones that you would really want to disinfect!!

My brother is cared for by the Cleveland VA hospital. His c-scope was done at a local hospital where dozens of vets had appointments, one after another. Everything went very well . . . . hopefully the tubes were sterilized between patients.

Blessings!

so sorry Navy !!! I hope you aren't being treated in Florida . . . or maybe that's the best place for a c-scope now that they are following proper protocol.

Blessings!

nope ...Kansas but it creeps me out that I am the one who gets the last scope of the day because I do not have diabetes.

I just read about this in the paper. such a sad story. what a worry for folks and this will probably scare even MORE people from having necessary c-scopes.
49 y/o woman.  Diagnosed 4/06 after colonscopy, SBFT, CT-scan all showed crohns. 3 months later, after pred and remicade, all tests showed no crohns. December '06 had adhesions cut through a laparoscopy. Now taking Glycolax, Ultra Fiber Plus, Florastor, and DHEA. Have become gluten-free diet per naturopath's tests.

Whoa! That's the type of thing that makes you want to go and sterilize your own equipment before a scope!

If they let you in and don't wait 20 minutes to sterilize the equipment, they better have two instruments or else you know that it's not sterile...

Sterility most definitely matters in the gut esp when it comes to us because we bleed inside and have wounds, etc...but I mean, even if we didn't bleed, it's still a big deal!! And if someone who works at a hospital tells you this, it means they're uneducated, don't know what they're talking about, don't take good care of themselves, and therefore won't care about whether you could get HIV or Hepatitis C. Get as far as you can away from such places!

You can't trust anyone when it comes to sterility. Same thing with gynecologists. Honestly, this is something I'm deeply aware of and know for a fact that this is not something that happened in Florida and couldn't happen to me or you. I'm sorry, but I'm so freaking angry when it comes to this...we shouldn't have to worry about these things and yet we do...

Oh, for heaven's sake . . . even at $10,000 - $20,000 per endoscope ... why not have enough scopes to allow for an appropriate amount of time to sanitize them between patients. A few procedures would pay for each new scope and then this time crunch wouldn't be an issue. Sounds too simple.

I never realized I had to worry about where a scope had been before it goes down my throat or in the back door. Pretty sad. eyes
