hi, i havent posted on here for a while but have recently been having some strange troubles.
ive had crohns since 2005, has surgery in 2006 and had end of illieum taken away so now have short bowel mal absorbtion and have regular watery D 3-4 times a day.

however about 2 weeks ago i started getting backed up not going for days and really straining. my stomach swells and i get abdo pain i pass some stool every few days but its still so hard and painful its completly out the ordinary for me.
my gp prescribed stool softener movicol everyday which i took but didnt work then he gave me what he called an emergency tablet normax which pushes everthing out. took that and within hours had cronic D but then a day or so later constipated again, took another tablet yesterday and had D all day which made me very ill and sore. Now i'm feeling backed up again and im pretty confused. this is very out of the ordinary for me and im quite worried. The gp recomended more movicol but the stuffs rubbish, i feel like im being ignored by the doctors and im currently waiting for a appoitment with my gastro doc. Any advice would be great???
thanks

Do you feel like your rectum is inflamed so that nothing can actually get through, or just constipation?

I've never been backed up for several days, but I do feel at times like I have waste that needs to come out but it can't GET out.  It is like there is a kink in there, or a gas pocket that has blocked traffic.  I have found that sometimes sitting on the toilet and stretching upward and sometimes massaging my abdomen with small, firm circles can help get things moving.

If I am having 'trouble' it is not unusual to spend 10min or more sitting on the toilet to be sure everything has evacuated.  I seem to only be able to eliminate in small portions when my stool is very loose and it takes about 10min for everything to travel out. Otherwise, I am up/down/back/forth on the pot because I didn't give everything time to evacuate.  When stools are firmer, they are usually able to evacuate in one large sitting, though I will still sit for 5-10min to be sure I am done.  I really HATE going to the bathroom, so I don't want to be gong back/forth and would rather get it all out at one sitting.

Anyway, try the stretching and deep massaging to stimulate your bowels to move, see if that helps.

Crohn's and UC are pretty darn crappy, but if you can't laugh at yourself, you'll cry......I'd much rather laugh.
2001 Dx'd with UC.  No remission.  No improvement with Remicade.  5/2008 surgery, removal of 6" of left side colon.  Dx changed to Crohn's.  Remission for 8-9wks after surgery, symptoms returned after resuming 6MP.  Changed maintenance med to Methotrexate (MTX) and had great results with IM injections.  Nausea and symptoms returning with oral MTX.  Switched back to IM injections and am slowly improving.

You said you had short bowel syndrome. How much bowel did you have removed? You have to have alot removed to even be classified a short bowel syndrome. I have had two resections totalling 18" and I do not have short bowel.

As for the C, I use stool softners. But I see you tried that. How long did you use them? I use them daily, if I don't I get backed up really bad. But you have to use them daily for them to work. I think you might want to ask your GI for a SBFT or a c-scope. Could be your developing a stricture. Good luck!

its short bowel mal absorbtion so i dont have the part of the bowel thats binds all the bile salts together and forms the food therefore it usualyy passes thru watery and un digested. i used plenty of stool softeners but as im out on placement i dont have time to take movicol twice daily. hoping to hear fromgastro soon.

I have had the same part removed. Just fyi that is not short bowel. Its just the valve was removed and has caused the increase in D. I use to have problems with D and started taking probiotics and that slowed things down for me. I have been using stool softners nightly for years. If I don't go even one day, I will be hurting really bad. Hopefully the GI gets you figured out.
