Two weeks ago on Thursday I had surgery to re-drain an abcess I had.  Then on Friday I had emergency surgery to drain an abcess that had formed behind the one I just had drained.  Now my butt is still hard wich is making me wonder if I have another abcess or if it didn't get drained all the way.  I dont know if I am just paranoid or if I should have the surgeon cut off my butt so I dont keep getting abcesses.

how long have you been having these abcess whilt being on medication? My problem with "cutting off my butt" is that there is no guarantee crohns wont attack another area once the perianal region has been removed.

nono  Abcesses are so tricky sometimes behind the abcesses there is a fistula in some cases like mine my abcesses would not heal either i had them lanced and drained and they keep on coming back they drove me crazy i couldnt sit in a chair it would have to be sideways and walking felt like everything in my bottom was going to fall out,so they tried to scope me with lots of pain meds mind you or i would have never had it done and they didnt have to go far cause hiding behind the abcesses was a fistula they didnt know cause they couldnt see it and i was so sore that i didnt roll over much for them to poke and stick at it cause it hurt so bad,at the time i also had in drainage tubes in my right check and my lower back cause i also ahd abcesses on my bowel they put the tubes in on the cat scanner table i will never forget that one of my worst memorys.Have they ever checked you to see if there is maybe a fistula behind the abcesses think about it let them know.Good luck i feel for ya i know how painfull they really are try soaking in the tub with some abes and salt (not table salt) it helps a littlte bite and get a dounate (spelled wrong should now how i eat enough of them  i love my sugar for energy) but it will take the pressure of your bottom so you can sit without pushing on that abcesses another word from the wise get some wet wipes for yourselfs dont use toilet paper it hurts to bad and keep the area clean as you can without tearing yourself apart,I hope that helps a bite i feel so bad for you i remember them like it was yesterday but i can tell you it is one of the worst things so it cant get any worse it was for me anyway confused keep your head up and find a doctor you trust and ask him is its possiable if there could be an fistula there hiding i really hope not. Most times if the abcesses wont drain on its owe and they tried draining it and it keeps coming back they can lance it which that means they remove the sack around the abcesses it has to go so you can heal.I wish you all the luck in the world please keep me posted my e-mail address is jenniferbowser@eastlink.ca if you want to chat private if not you can find me most days on this site as onthecan smilewinkgrin . My daughter had her abcess drained twice and once they had to put the drain back in.  In March the surgeon actually scraped out the abcess and had her in the hospital on Flagyl and cipro by iv.  At home she has continued on cipro and two whirlpool baths a day. It's draining less so we hope it's getting better.  She uses a donut to sit on, it helps depending upon where the abscess is exactly.  She is also on percocet, however, now she's trying to taper off it.

We were told in the hospital that remicade would help close the abscess and the fistula related to it.  But we were not able to get insurance coverage for remicade and we are waiting for Cimzia to approve her for assistance.

That is funny Trad and were likely right which is the scary part.If cutting of our bums would solve the problem i think there would be alot of but in our land fills and who knows we dont know how we got it but is it possiable that if our bums go to land fills could the rodents all end up with crohnes,if its possiable sign me up,i go to the gym everyday to try to keep my bum up were its suppose to be but if we had none what would we sit on then.If crohnes only affected certain parts of the body it would be great wouldnt it i only have 11 feet left a small amout of large and the rest is my small cry going to the gym is something i look forward to everyday however i dont look forward to jumping out of the pool and leaving my aqua-fit class graspping at my bum to run through the showers than the dressing rooms then finally the bathrooms you know the ones open on top and bottom i hate those dont you there is no privacy what so ever sad then i return to my class and have everyone stare at me including the teacher and everyone stops talking when you enter the room i tell them i forgot to turn of the stove or i left a candle going and had to place acall home do ya think they believe me i dont, who cares we are all there for the same reasons since i started going i have so much more energy. Thanks for the info and support.  We are waiting for Cimzia to approve her - that should be any time now.  She 21 now and was diag at 19 when her appendix ruptured and she had a resection.  She never had the pain and discomfort most have, after her resection she got used to frequent less formed bms, she avoided some foods but otherwise was doing very well until last summer.  When the pain in her bum was so bad she couldn't sit down. Once she has the initial surgery to put a drain in she  had immediate relief.  But the darn thing won't clear up and two  1/2 weeks ago her gi took one look at her and told her she needed to go to the hospital because her pain was not being managed that's when they scraped it out.

She is going to quit her job so she will be eligible for her father's insurance.  once she's on it she will go back to work - at least that's the plan.  Although I was looking at our insurance plan and remicade isn't even covered.

shakehead  Hey Crohns mom were do you live are you in canada,we have programs that will cover these expensive drugs all together we have M.S.I here and if they wont pay for it the doctor sends in a form to the drug company itself and explains that this person could really benifit from this drug and almost all the time they will cover them,is that something that you would have were you live.Maybe even try going to the remicade site and search for finance end and see what they can do,one more suggestions if the doctor is saying she needs this drug she can go on a trail study which the company will take care of all the costs of remicade its worth a try.Your bowel buddy. yeah Ihope that is the news you were looking for and i hope this helps she will get well its going to take time. Hi Dreamer!

How did they treat your abscess? Did they just insert a drain? This usually doesn't work. It is usually more successful to open it up and scrape it out. Was the ER surgeon a colo-rectal surgeon or a general surgeon? General surgeons don't have enough experience with abscesses -- although they would probably disagree, but colo-rectal surgeons would probably agree with me! And CD abscesses are a specialty. Do you have your own colo-reactal surgeon who knows CD?

Also, drains may not allow all the pus to come out and can actually allow bacteria to get in there in that nice protected abscess pocket. Ick! When they really open it up, you get a open whole that can't trap anything.

Do you have a fevor? If you do and/or if the lump grows, I would call your surgeon right away.

I had two side by side abscessess. My fistula had branched and two abscesses formed. My surgeon opened both up and scraped them out -- which left a big whole but it healed completely. I was under anesthesia so he could really look around for any more problems.

Hi Onthecan! Glad you joined us! Unfortunately, italics, light colors, and paragraphs that are short on punctuation make posts hard to read for me. Would you please use regular black text unless you want to emphasis something? I want to read you posts -- it is important to hear from people with experience in these issues. Thank you!!
Diagnosed with rectal Crohn's in early 2007.  Several peri-rectal abscesses and two fistulae with setons.  Allergic to Remicade and Humira.  Currently on 6MP, and vitamins D and B-12.
