hey MrsM, it is really shocking at first. the first GI I went to sent me home with pentasa and pred, told me I had a serious, chronic condition, and he would see me in 6 weeks. yikes, I was so ill and not eating and really needed help. I found HW and a new GI!
if you have major inflammation, it is my understanding pentasa won't do the trick; it is a maintanance drug. what tests have you had and what does the doc have planned for you? the first few months are tough, but need to be about finding answers. this disease has folks at all levels, from one flair and no further problems, to those who are very ill, and everywhere in between.
even the advice to just eat a healthy diet seems odd. usually we start on a low-res diet. docs often don't mention other food ideas. but as you have probably noticed, some of us have great success with major dietary shifts, some it doesn't matter, some don't eat solid food at all!
I am blabbering, but I know what those first weeks are like and what I would do differently if I were to do it all again is to not panic, but to push quickly for as many tests and answers as possible. even tho the tests about killed me, as I tended to carry the barium around with me for several days and it made everything much worse! take care and keep asking questions. yp
