I'm scheduled for an abdominal CT scan tomorrow, and I didn't think I'd ever had one before so I looked it up.  Turns out I have.  The first one was during my two week hospital stay, and I refused the barium enema.  I told the tech I wasn't sure if I'd make it through the test as it was- there was no way I'd manage with an enema in me.  I guess he didn't want a mess to clean up!

Anway, do they always use the enema for an abdominal CT scan?  My mom swears she had one a few years ago without.  An enema is the one thing I've managed to avoid so far, and I'd really, really like to keep up that record.  I'm no where near as sick now as I was the last time I had the test done, and I don't think it would be the best move to refuse the enema again just because it scares me.  But I'd really like to.

I've had several abdominal CT scans and an enema has never been suggested to me. However, I do not have any rectal disease if that is a factor.

I had a abdo ct scan done this month and there was no barium enema, just the yukky fluid thing they make you drink and the dye they inject. One of our less horrible tests i might add.

I've never had barium with a CT scan...just 32oz or so of something mixed in with ginger ale or cranberry juice (yuck!) and then something injected into my veins. I've had barium to drink a couple of times with a small bowel follow-through x-ray series, but never an enema.

Well, you guys were right!  I had to drink about 40oz of iodine and Sprite and had an iodine IV, but no enema.  Whew!  That test wasn't bad at all.  I'd take that over a SBFT any day of the week.
