Hi There,

So I am a little bit scared that I may be having some narrowing or blockage issue going on. I was dx last year with Crohn's but it is pretty mild and after a few months on steroids my scope showed good results. I have not taken steriods since September. Just this past Sunday I started back up on Metformin for PCOS. I had been on it for a year and then stopped it in January due to crazy issues with nausea and food adversion. Once I stopped the metformin I felt fine. However the docs want me to try again this time with extended release with the thought that it would be more gentle. So started last Sunday had some mild nausea Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, then on Wednesday I started getting awful sharp cramping pains in my stomach. I would to try and have a bowel movement and little to no stool would pass. I did not take the Metformin again (weds was the last day). Friday and Saturday I again had sharp pains on and off all day long and little bowel movement. Last night and today I am having several bowel movements but still having the intermittent sharp cramping pains though they have lessened in severity. The pains last for about a minute or two and then stop and are occurring about 2 times an hour and more frequently after a meal. My first thought was the the XR metformin pills were getting stuck since I had passed whole but empty pill casing the first few days. But now that it is days later I am getting concerned that I may have narrowing or blockage going on. Overall I feel ok...no nausea just D and bleeding from the hemmys. My temp is about 100 but that is pretty normal for me most days. So I guess I am not about to run to the ER but I think I am calling the doc tomorrow if it persists. Does this sounds like it could be a narrowing or blockage issue or just simply irritated guts from the medication? thanks in advance for your thoughts :)

Hi Veebo,

Since you haven't had replies yet, I'll give it a shot. Although, I'm really no where near the expertise of most of the other regulars here. First of all, where was your Crohns located? I'm guessing the TI, as this is the most common, and most prone to the effects of narrowing. Are you a Diabetic? I don't understand only taking Metformin intermittently.

You certainly could be having more inflammation starting, that would be the most likely, but most here will need more info. to give sound answers. The best thing you could do though is get to your GI immediately!! I can't stress that enough, as the longer Crohns is allowed to smoulder, the worse the potential complications might be. You always want to stay a step ahead of any activity with this disease, that's one of the most important things I've learned about this disease.

On the bright side, you may just be having constipation, or as you suggest the Metformin may be a problem. Once again, get checked out, that's the only way to deal with these things. Good Luck.

Tom.

My daughter was diagnosed Feb. 19/07, (13 yrs. old at time of diagnosis), with Crohn's of the Terminal Illium. Has used Prednisone and Pentasa. Started Imuran (02/09), had an abdominal abscess (12/08). 2cm of Stricture.

Hi,

I've had several bowel obstructions. Not sure if you are having the same problem as me but, here is what happens to me. Pain - severe stabbing pain. Then there is like a belly/bowel paralysis ....extremely tender........... I feel like I've been punched in the gut or the way you feel 2 days after doing 100 situps for the first time. It lasts for hours, and I am unable to stand up...as long as I am in fetal positon or not moving...the pain is tolerable. Nausea, fever follows, and if it doesn't start getting better, it will just get worse..........lots of belly distention......so off to ER.....

My obstructions are due to a strangulating incisional hernia which is being fixed next week.

You should get it checked out.......don't leave it.......anything associated with this disease does not get better on it's own.

Good luck.

My blockage is always in theTI.  When it is bad nothing is passed.  There is severe adbominal pain with throwing up.  If you are blocked you will begin to dehydrate, so drink gaterade as it has electrolites in it (pediolite if you can handle the taste). Don't force the fluids! Just drink what you can handle and REST.  If you are blocked you need to rest.  If you are passing gas you are not blocked, but if you are only passing a little you could be partially blocked. It is really hard to tell from the info you gave.  Also I am not familiar with the meds you are taking.  I don't believe I have helped you much, but stay with us and someone will get you more info.
Over 30 years experience! Dx 1976, surgery every seven years, the only effective long term drug has been very low doses of prednisone. Refuse to take anymore immune suppressants.
