Hi everyone

I'm 19 and have had Crohn's disease since the age of 10 :(. I was just wondering.. what tips do people have to hide the noises, smells and all the nasty horrible symptoms that come with it! Particularly, when in public places!  Advice appreciated!

Believe it or not, fibre supplements...my GI suggested I take fibre supplements daily and indefinitely and of course it added to my already excessive gas and bloating but once my system adjusted to it then all bloating went away and gas is soooo minimal, it also gave me formed stools, less frequency and mucus issues as well...it'a been 5 yrs and I still take one fibre supplement daily.

:)

There's this stuff called 'Just a Drop' that you can order online, and it works pretty well to remove the horrible bathroom smells. It doesn't work perfectly, but it does better than regular air freshener. You put a drop in the toilet before you go, and that's it! Also, I think probiotics and fiber would help tremendously.

For smells, I love Bath & Body Works room sprays in Cinnamon Stick and Vanilla Coconut. One spray and the room is delightful! No one will ever know you were there. :)

You can light a match, that will cover the smell too:) But I think the just a drop is the best to cover the smell. As for the noise, I only use the bathroom at work when no one is in there. I can't go otherwise, and that sucks when you have CD. But probiotics do help alot to even out the bacteria in your intestines and help to form the stools and remove some of the stinkiness. I can't take the fibre supplements myself as I have the stricturing type of CD.

I carry a small atomizer with perfume in it in my purse, so if I go to the bathroom and I'm worried about a smell, I just spray some of that. I won't go with other people there though, it's more because I'm worried that someone will walk in right after as I'm finishing up and notice the smell and then I would have to deal with the awkwardness. lol

If I use a public bathroom I blame it on the guy that went in before me. My reputation at home is already established so all I can do is apologize. As far as the belly noises go, I just say "Wow, I need a sandwich!"

Crohns 30 years. Ileostomy for 15 years. Symptom free for 14 years until 8 months ago. Now on Remicade, B-12 injections and iron. Feeling much better!

If Im at a friend or family members house, I always turn the sink on while Im in the bathroom. It hides noises for the most part.  In public, I always do the classic flush when I know something loud is about to happen.  I carry those tiny purse sized perfumes from bath and body works in my purse. I also carry summers eve wipes so I feel clean afterwards.

Dianogsed with Crohns: At 16 years old. 22 years old now.
Surgeries:2 Bowel Resections, Gallbladder Removed.
Current Meds: Imuran 50mg, Vitamin B12 (injection), D, and C tablets. Fish Oil Tablets, Cats Claw, Slippery Elm, and Reishi.

When I gotta go in a public place, I either wait for someone to flush the toilet or make some noise, or I just flush myself and then go as quickly as possible. I also put some toilet paper in the bowl and then try to hold some up to my "rump" (lol) to make sure it doesn't make too much noise! For the smell, I actually found this mini air freshener in the travel section at Target, it was sweet! It did sound kinda loud when it sprayed though so I haven't bought one since....

I must say, what a cosiderate bunch we have here...I too carry a small spray bottle but have never had to use it thank goodness, but I'm always prepared by having it in my purse just incase (usually the only time I make a bad enough smell is during my periods but usually during that time I don't leave the house often anyways).

another kind of funny story. I bought some citrus air freshener once and took it to work because the guys were always on me about stinking up the bathroom. One day after I came out of the bathroom a coworker went in after me. He came out a few minutes later and said it smelled like someone crapped an orange tree. I still laugh about that today.

Eh-hh - CD potty smell. Very distinct and grotesque odor for sure. I carry Fabreze, though now everyone at work knows NOT to go into the bathroom after me. :(
