Ive had this fistula right above my bellybutton for a couple months now.  Its the result of a surgery, and 3 abscess's.  Anyways, its been healing in diameter, but not from the inside out.  At this point the hole is so small that I litterally have to sterilize a bobby pin to push in some gauze to stuff it. Its about an inch deep, but the hole is so frickin small. I had one Remicade treatment, which I had an alergic reaction to and ended up in the hospital, and Im also on 100mg of Imuran that can help heal fistulas. Im wondering if at this point its ok to let it go by itself, or if I would be risking another abscess by letting it close?  Im going to call my GI surgeon in the morning, but its always a big production with him, because he will want to see me, and I'll have to call off work, and blah blah blah.  But I was just wondering if anyone else has been at this point and what they were advised to do?

I think your best bet is to let the surgeon make the call on this one. I know it's a hassle with the work schedule but you might end up having to take even more time off work if you let it close and a bigger abscess develops. Let us know what he/she says!

Hi Mag Correct me if I am wrong but didn't you have open surgery to clean out the abscess? Are they telling you to keep it stuffed? When I had my abcess when it was that small I just covered it and kept it clean. Now for the resection that got infected they stuffed it at the hospital .Sorry you had a reaction to the Remicade. Let us know how you make out. lol gail
