I wanted to post that I met with my surgeon yesterday and have scheduled my colostomy reversal for May 15th. I have had it for six months. I have done some research online about reversals and am a little concerned that I may run into issues and not be able to get it reversed. My wife keeps telling to just relax and asks when I turned into a pesimist (I am the eternal optimist). Anyway, I wanted to ask for thoughts and prayers as the day approaches. I will post when I get a chance (or maybe have my wife post for me while I am in the hospital).

Hi Shawn,

I just had my temporary ileostomy reversed on 4/8. Do you have any questions I can answer for you? I know an ileostomy and a colostomy are a bit different, but maybe I can reassure you somewhat. I'm doing alright and the recovery for this surgery has been a lot easier than the recovery from the surgery for the ileostomy. Be sure to bring some wet wipes or moist toilet wipes with you to the hospital. They were my lifesaver! Once your bowels wake up and you start going again you'll get butt burn if you don't have moist wipes!

Good luck, I know you'll be just fine!

Erica,

I am nervous about the chances of a problem and my surgeon not being able to complete the reversal and ending up with a permanent colostomy. How long were you in the hospital after your reversal? I have also heard that the recovery from the reversal is much easier than the initial surgery.

Shawn,

I was in the hospital 10 days, but I've heard that is much longer than usual. My surgeon had initially told me only 3-5 days, but I had some complications because some of my small bowel had herniated near the stoma. This caused my bowels to take about 5 days to finally "wake up" and begin working again. But wihtout complications I'm sure I would have been out of there much sooner.

Have you talked to your surgeon about your concerns? Has he or she told you that you could end up with a permanent colostomy? If you haven't talked to him/her I would definetly make an appointment to talk about it before the surgery. Surgeries are alway nerve wracking because we know the things that can go wrong. I was nervous for mine too, but it's turned out okay and it's so wonderful to be living without the bag!!

I honestly have no idea what a colostomy reversal is, Shawn, but I do know that this current "blip" in my g'son's life is just one tiny bump in his long "bumpy" road of CD. Here you've been facing surgery & sending incouraging thought to me & others.... & all I could think of my my g'son's flare up! I didn't know.

My prayers & best wishes, Shawn. I pray everything goes really, really well. You "give" so much of yourself to others... I just know that it will all come back to you "ten-fold". Wishing you an uneventful speedy recovery. My heart also goes out to your wife too, whom I'm sure will be needing support as well.

Hugs to both of you.

I don't look forward to the running to the bathroom again either, but it will be better than having a bag hanging from my stomach for me anyway. I am in clinical remission (no symptoms of CD, orther than some loose stools). I am getting anxious to have it done now, just to get it done not as nervous about complications.

I have had the bag since November, so just about 6 months, but it seems like forever.
