So I'm not that familiar with fistula's or how to tell if you have one. For about 2-3 months I have been having some "gas" that feels like it's coming from the wrong area in the mornings. I have been watching and DO NOT seem to have bowel movements coming from the vagina. I have some hemmroids that won't go away. They do not bleed but are very painful when I have more than 1-2 BM's per day. Somewhere I read that it is possible to pass gas thru the vagina but I can't remember when or where I read it in order to go back and check it. I have started to worry that maybe this is a recto-vaginal fistula or something?!! I guess with crohn's when something is different you worry that it's just something else from this darn disease. Maybe I'm overreacting.

Can anyone help? I want to get some more info before I go to see my GI so I don't feel so stupid asking when it might be nothing. Are there signs or symptoms?
Thanks in advance!

Hello Chasity,

I don't have one of those, but I suggest you see your GYN in addition to your GI. Maybe even first in case it is something else (yeast infection?). Recto-vaginal fistulae cross over the "turf" of both doctors, and it might be best to see them both, especially if your GI is unsure.

Praying it isn't one!

I have had one. My first fistula was one of those lovely things! I was passing gas out of my vagina. And I also had drainage out of it. I would go see your gi first. Most gyn don't have much experience with them. Mine was originally misdiagnosed as a bartholin cyst, and was then cut opened and drained, but it ended up that that was just where the fistula had tunneled to. Also are you sure the roids are really roids and not skin tags?

They were checked by my GI when they were bleeding awhile back and he said they were hemmroids. I used proctofoam and they got smaller and stopped bleeding but never went completely away. They are more irritating than anything.

My fistula is not into the vaginal tract, but opens right next to it. Sometimes I feel the air passing through... Since you're on Remicade, I will hope that's not what it is! Best of luck!

I had a rectal-vaginal fistula last year. I started noticing gas coming out of my vagina once in while so I mentioned it to my family doc.  But she wasn't too concerned and said it's normal. But then I noticed it was happening more often; especially when I was very gassy. After 3 months of this I went to see my GI. He told me right away that I know my body better than anyone and if it didn't feel normal then it was not normal and scheduled me for an MRI. The MRI confirmed a tiny fistula high up in the vagina. The remicade has closed it up as far as I can tell.

Lesson learned......trust your instinct. You know your body. If something doesn't feel right, go check it out. Good luck!
