I reacted to my iron infusion today... and now can't get it until July!

I'm so frustrated. I broke out into hives from head to toe when they did the small amt of iron to check for reaction (it's been over 6 months since my last one, so they did it like the 1st time again). We treated it with steroid and benadryl, it went away, and we tried again. Hives came back again and even worse this round. The doctor pulled the plug on it. He asked if I was allergic to sulfate, and I said I was allergic to sulfa - is that the same thing? And he said yes, and the iron I was getting was sulfate. I needed to be on the other kind of iron that does not have sulfa in it. He was afraid the hives was just the beginning, since I was having some shortness of breath. I was willing to endure the hives to get the iron but they weren't willing to do that.

The nurse said this is the same kind I had last time that I didn't react to so they thought it'd be okay. *shrug*

Needless to say, I spent 5 hours at the infusion center and only got 200 mg out of 1000 mg. The iron I need is backordered and won't be available until the end of June so I can't have an infusion until the first of July.

Summer is my busiest time workwise and I'm not sure how I'll function until then without it. Maybe the 200 mg I got will make a difference?

Anyone else react? Or know anything about iron infusions and the different kinds?

I take heme iron polypeptide, which I'm assuming is similar to what janice takes. Mine is called Proferrin, available in Canada without a prescription if you're Canadian..works apparently about as well as the infusions do. Waiting until July without taking anything might be pretty rough, I would have to agree and try taking a supplement in the meantime if you can.

Valerie, how much do you pay for the Proferrin? My pharmacy charged me $26 for 30 pills!

I paid about $78 for 90 of them, so it sounds right to me. It is really expensive, but they work well for me! Have you taken any yet? If so, how's it going? I was thinking about you.
