I'm having a really rough time with my colonoscopy prep.  My GI prescribed a miralax prep- 238 gram bottle of miralax mixed with 64 oz. of gatorade.  I was supposed to drink half last night, half this morning (starting at 4 am).  My colonoscopy was scheduled for 9 this morning.
I started drinking it last night.  about 2 hours after starting the prep I got terribly sick to my stomach and vommitted.  I managed to drink down half the prep, but I woke up several times in the middle of the night to throw up.  I got up at 4am and starting drinking the rest of it, but I got sick 6 more times before 8am.  Nothing was going through me, no effects from the miralax.  I assume I couldn't hold enough of it down.
I called the GI on call at 6am.  He told me I couldn't do the test if nothing was going through me and I was continuing to vomit.  Now they've rescheduled me for Thursday.  I did clear liquids yesterday (Monday), they told me to do full liquids today, clear tomorrow, and 1 gallon fo go-lytely tomorrow night.  The test will be at 3pm on Thursday.
I'm not sure I can do this.  I still feel so sick.  How am I going to get a whole gallon of go-lytely down?  I remember having it in the hospital and it was TERRIBLE!  And this couldn't come at a worse time for work- I have a huge report due on Friday.  I'm so stressed out and worried!  And this is making me feel very sad and discouraged.

Has anyone else had problems with colonoscopy prep?  Anyone have words of encouragement?

I just did a colonoscopy prep using something called Moviprep..it was so easy and didn't  make me feel sick at all. I drank 32 oz the night before and then 32oz the morning of. Please call your doctor and ask for this. You mix the powder in a little container with water. It tastes like lemon-lime not bad at all! I just had my father in law get this instead of the go-lightly jug which I know is terrible.

Seriously ask for it..my husband is a pharmacist and says this is what the doctors use now..good luck

(((BIG HUGS))) I always used the Fleets Phosphosoda for my scopes. It was so much easier just drinking 3 oz. of this salt water junk than trying to get one of those big jugs down. I haven't had a scope in a few years, and they really supposedly aren't using this anymore, but if you can find it, I would use it. Less to drink.

Can you get them to RX an anti nausea med, even something by suppository. I know it sounds awful, but it may be the only way you can keep the prep down. And I agree with Nanners, I might go off the board and do my own prep, just so that I could get the test done. I can not even think about go-lytley without getting sick to my stomach.

Managing with strict low residue diet, keeping symptoms to a minimum. All test show small amount of ulceration, still have occasional blockages. But still have a great time with my 2 daughters and husband!

I just had my colonoscopy yesterday. My doc was going to give me something new because supposetly Fleets Phosphosoda is no longer on the market. That new stuff is a full liter and i said jokingly "give me any amount of pills if i just can avoid drinking this nasty prep!" Her responds was "Can you drink a lot of fluid?" I said "Hell yea!" My doc gave me a script for Osmoprep 1.5 mg. 32 pills...they worked like a charm for me....no gas pain... no cramping at all. From now on I will allways ask for the pills.

You poor love. Did they stop to think that, by the time you've had the scope, you'll have been without food for almost a week?

I don't know what to suggest. Often vomiting can suggest that a prepping patient is dehydrated, but your situation sounds very extreme. I'm really sorry you're having such a tough timem.

I'm sorry you are having such a difficult time. I get nauseous from all of the liquid preps - they all make me vomit. For my last colonoscopy, my doc prescribed Osmoprep and it was so much easier than I could've imagined. The challenge is drinking a whole lot with the pills, but I'll take that over vomiting! I drank the pills with Lemon-Lime Gatorade, which was recommended as opposed to regular water b/c it has electrolytes to help you stay hydrated. I also drank some ginger ale during the prep. Supposedly, the key to the pills is making sure you drink all of the required amounts - so I literally measured my 8 ozs with a measuring cup. You may want to see if your doctor will prescribe this. Good luck!

After several experiences, I've learned that I cannot do the full colonoscopy prep. Since I always have D anyway, I drink as much of the stuff as I can, until my body starts telling me that I've had enough--usually about half of what I'm supposed to drink. I never tell my doctors--and nobody's ever complained. The amount they prescribe is for people who don't have chronic diarrhea and sensitive digestive systems.

I also refuse to take the laxative pills they expect me to take hours after drinking the liquid. Whenever I've taken them, I've had violent projectile vomiting--and show up for the colonscopy weak and thoroughly dehydrated, making it hard for them to find a vein for the IV. I always call the doctor and let him/her know that that's happened in the past, and he/she usually tells me that I can skip the pills and just do the liquid.

It doesn't surprise me that you vomited after drinking so much of that stuff. My advice: drink less of it. Your system will clear itself out just fine.

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement. Right now I'm doing my best to get down as much of the go-lytely as I can. I'm on my 4th glass. The one upside here is that I haven't had real food in so long there's really not that much in my system to "clear out". I'm hoping I'll only need half of this stuff to get me where I need to be.

I'm so grateful to everyone for their suggestions and encouragement. Once I finally started feeling better yesterday I was able to more calmly assess the situation and get myself psyched up to do the prep tonight. I just keep trying to remember that in less than 24 hours I can have REAL food again! I can't wait! I made my roommate promise to cook me a hamburger tomorrow night. Mmmmmmm.......
And once this test is done I (hopefully!) won't have to have another colonoscopy for a couple of years. So I can do it! I'm almost there!!

Crohns can be so hard, but it makes me proud to see all of us crohnies here so bravely plowing through all the treatments, tests, and other ugly details. I think we're really a tough group, don't you?

I'll let you all know how it goes tomorrow!

Hope it went well. I'm glad to see all the posts on the Osmoprep since I will be starting those in about an hour... It's got to be better than Fleets!

When I saw my doctor last month he told me I couldn't do the Osmo prep pills any more. That they had been taken off the market. If he decides I have to have a C-Scope, I will be questioning this, since I have only done the pill preps for about 4 years and refuse to do the liquids.

I hope all went well for you and you are enjoying your hamburger!!!

Well, I made it through!
I only drank about half the go-lytely, but it was enough to clean me out. I hadn't had solid food since Sunday, so there wasn't much in my system. When the nurse at the hospital asked me if I had finished all the prep I told her "yes ma'am!" I knew it was fine, and I didn't want to hear from anyone that I couldn't have the test.

Anyhow, the test went fine and I'm now at home enjoying my hamburger! No more colonoscopies for me for a looooooong time, I hope!!!

Thanks for all yoru words of encouragement everyone!

Entocort 9 mg/day, Prednisone 20 mg/day, started Humira 1/22/08, started 100 mg of Azasan (Imuran) 2/20/08. Increased Azasan to 150 mg 10/15/08. Discontinued Humira 11/03/08 after extreme fatigue and moderate muscle aches. Started Cimzia 12/4/08. Down to 5 mg/day of Pred now, and will continue to taper until completely off as long as the other meds keep me off the porcelain.

I'm convinced that Prednisone is the root of all evil, and primarily responsible for global warming.

OMG, I am glad I found this thread...I am having the same problem as the OP...my anxiety level is tremendous, but only for the prep..I have IBsD, four years of watery Diarrehea.. I told the doc I didn;t think I could do the prep, no way could I drink a gallon of anything.
He said you can do the Gatorade Miralax which I thought was ok...what I didn;t know was when they gave me the prep instructions it included taking 4 Ducolax pills at bedtime...what is the purpose of that, to keep me up all night I figure by that time I will be so exhausted...I am afraid to take the pills with my condition, I think it will cause me intolerable pain and I hadn;t even thought of the nausea...
I was thinking of the just doing the miralax and 64oz of gatorade and hope for the best...I think it will do the trick..I only eat one meal a day, and plan to limit my food intake for 2 days instead of one..I feel like I am doing a prep on a normal day...so I am happy to read that some of you modify the prep based on your own needs...

If you have any questions on the prep, I suggest you start a new post of your own. These older posts tend to get ignored as most think they already responded to it. Just fyi we also have an IBS forum also. Thanks!

The only prep that doesn't make me throw up is the Miralax. Maybe it was all the Gatorade that got you sick. The regular Gatorade makes me sick but I can small amounts of the lower sugar one.
