I've only been on them a little over a week, combined with cipro and flagyl. Nothing seems to be helping and I'm tired of cramping at bedtime simply because I used the enema. Last night I didn't do one since I felt like I needed to have a bm and knew it wouldn't stay in long. Since they are costing me $55 a week and not working I'm pretty much giving up on them. Just don't want to have problems stopping since they said it's steroids and I may have the same side effects.

thanks

I don't think a taper is necessary with only a week of the cortenemas. I didn't taper unless I'd been on them for months. You could call your pharmacist if you don't want to call your doc.

They are very expensive! What a way to spend your money, huh? I would cringe everytime I'd fork out that kind of $$ for enemas! ;-)

Have you tried the ASA enemas? I can't use those, but I believe they help others.
--female dx as UC in '04 (1st symptoms in '03), switched to Crohn's in '05, 1 fistula, crohn's colitis, limited to large intestine  --rejected (reaction/didn't work): Asacol, AZA, 6-MP, MTX, Remicade, Humira, prednisone, Tysabri
--Prochymal in Phase III study (can't wait til it's approved!)
--currently taking methylprednisolone 40mg-taper.  Started Cimzia first dose 2/10/09.  Dx Osteoporosis 10/08 started Forteo 1/27/09

Oh those enemas are extremely expensive in Australia too!! I hate it!!

If you’ve only been on them for a week you might want to give them more of a chance before you stop. I was on them for 6 weeks and didn’t taper off at all, and didn’t have any side effects.

Are you using them twice a day?

No I haven't tried the ASA enemas. This is the first time I've used any enemas at all. I'm starting up with new docs and on top of that, we just weren't sure if this was a flare up or a bug since it's different than my previous patterns.

The doc did want me to take them for 30 days but not only did the pharmacy have trouble keeping them in stock, they also are proving to be too much for my budget right now. They only have me taking one a day, at bedtime. Which really makes bedtime a blast. I lie there cramping and feeling like my quality of life is slipping away. When I know they could just prescribe prednisone and it would be cheaper and simpler, even though it will be worse for me in the long run. I've never been noncompliant with my meds before, but my new docs aren't inspiring my trust at this point. I don't get in to see the new gi until the 8th. Supposedly she is advising my regular doc.

The weird thing I noticed today though, after not using the enema last night, I've actually gone to the bathroom less so far today. I went out and got some Align probiotics since I saw that thread. Now that I'm done with my antibiotics I am hoping it will help.
