Has anyone used Pico salax for a colonoscopy prep? Is it better than the good old phospha soda??

This is what the dr prescribed this time around. They no longer use the phospha soda. I hope it is better. Though atleast I could keep the PS down unlike the one time I used the Golytely. That was AWEFUL!!

hi there,

I had my colonoscopy last week and I took it at 8 am and tried to drink it the quickest possible so i wouldn't have to taste it too much. But after i was done i kept having this nasty taste in my mouth for hours and had goosebumps the whole time just thinking about it.

The 2nd time i took it at 8 pm i threw up 30 secs later. Couldn't take it no more. And i threw up again few hours later.

I'd say eat very light the day before so that after the first dose you're cleaned out well enough. And keep drinking lots of water right after. Mine had this light citrus orange flavor taste but still.

Goodluck!

yeah overall a pretty good prep. Its the only prep I've had, but I've had it twice. Before my first scope I was on here and heard pretty good reviews about Pico-salax, too. I don't think they have it yet in the US, just canada and maybe a few other countries? Anyways, compared to the big golytely and others, this ones alot better. For one, its only two small cups (actually half a cup each: 125mL each), and you drink them usually about 6-8 hours apart if i can remember. And while it doesn't taste too bad, it tastes kind of has a weird sour citrus flavor. Prob best to drink with cold water, since you mix the powder with 125 Ml of water each...thats like less than your average juice box.

My ONLY big advice is, don't waste half a day sitting around waiting for this to happen (crappin) lol. For me, I found that the bowel movements don't start flowing til at least 4 hours after the first drink. Some doctors even write to take bisacodyl before the first drink to loosen up stools. Again, this won't do ALOT. Things won't be moving right away, unless your bowel habits are to normally go more frequently. Also, your supposed to drink lots of water thru the day, as to keep hydrated. One can only attempt to keep up with the hydration after the craps have begun. You'll probably be somewhat dehydrated for the scope the next day, and they might have a tough time finding a vein for your IV. Minimize this by drinking the water, and saving your kidneys some work, too.

I've taken it twice, the first time I reacted really badly to it, but the second time it went smoothly. First time it started working after about an hour though, second time it took like 6 hours lol. It isn't so bad though, the taste is nothing compared to other preps from what I hear, I wouldn't sit around drinking it all day, but it definitely isn't gag-inducing. The first time I did throw up a lot though, but I was before I did the prep anyway, so no surprises there. It's supposed to be the mildest liquid prep you can get. Good luck.

I've used it with no problems. I found it much better than Fleet Phospho-soda.

Had my colonoscopy yesterday. The pico salax was great. The taste wasn't bad at all and the amount is so small. There was no explosive bms either like I got with phospha soda. I would use it again, no problem.
