I am anxious that I am developing a fistula.

I had a peri-anal abscess that was drained about a week and half ago and seems to be healing well, but i have developed a few small irritating bumps around the area. They are not draining or painful, but a little bit itchy/uncomfortable.

I have never had a fistula, but know they are a risk after an abscess. Any advice on how to know? or symptoms to look for? I have a follow-up appt on friday with my surgeon, but i guess am just trying to ease my anxiety now :-/ good thing is I am on cipro, so hopefully nothing gets worse.

I have 2 fistulas right now so don't be afraid. As far as I can tell the main difference between the two is a fistula sometimes won't heal. Its a tract between your guts and your skin whereas an abscess is a pocket of infection that can be drained and has a better chance of healing completely. Either one, as you know, is no fun but both are treatable and can heal. Stay positive and best wishes, Tony
