My daughter has an appointment with her GI Friday along with her first Remicade treatment. One of my greatest concerns is nutrient intake. I have mentioned to the GI doc that I want these tested. My question is, what specifically should I be asking for? Since her inflammation lies in her duodenum, what would she potentially be lacking?

Iron is absorbed in the duodenum.

Since you know pretty much what you are wanting to know;(hope that makes sense)

I would ask your g.i. for a referral to a nutritionist, esp. since she is a teenager, she could benefit alot from it. You and your daughter both should go, if she is ok with it. I think they could help you guys alot.

If the inflammation is controlled by the Remicade, will nutrient absorption still be a problem?

Actually yes, it can be, but since she is so young, I dunno if it will be a real problem at this point. The problem with absorption is scar tissue, depending on how much damage the disease has done in the past, over how many years. It should get a whole lot better if you get the inflammation under control with remicade.
