Sorry to post the same thread again, but we got some confusing imput tonight from the Pharmacist. I filled a new prescription, and he told us that the blood work for the optimal dose may not be accurate because she is taking the Imuran with an Iron supplement. He said that Iron bonds with certain medications and weakens there effectiveness.
Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm not sure if we should increase the dose now, but I will call the GI in the morning to inquire about this.
My daughter was diagnosed Feb. 19/07, (13 yrs. old at time of diagnosis), with Crohn's of the Terminal Illium. Has used Prednisone and Pentasa. Started Imuran (02/09), had an abdominal abscess (12/08). 2cm of Stricture.

Yep, I agree with the others. I'd talk with the doc, as pharmacists can be pretty cluey and know things that doctors don't.

I haven't seen any research on this, nor has it come up at the conferences I've been to.

I suppose there is a hypothetical possibility, but to me that would mean following the metabolite blood tests for the optimum dose would be *more* important, not less so. If iron is affecting imuran absorption, the metabolite tests would show it; they wouldn't become less accurate because of this.
