Hi everyone,

Since I've been diagnosed with Crohn's, several urine tests came back indicating there was blood in my urine. Once I was told it was normal, but yesterday while I was in the hosp for the flu they seemed more concerned and told me it was a sign of kidney disease.

My feeling is that I'm so inflammed from my Crohn's that its even affecting my kidneys and its not a separate issue. Also,I'm on methotrexate...is it possible its damaging my kidneys?

Thanks for your help

cbk,
I have polycystic kidney disease and crohns I was told I could take the drug but had to have weekly blood work to check my kidney and liver function. That went well but I was only on it for 6 weeks because quite frankly it was a pain to get the blood work done every week and it wasn't helping. Did they do blood tests to check your creatine levels?

I agree with Irishmom4 - Have them check your creatine level.  It is a blood test.  They may also look at your BUM in a blood test.  The creatine is the main thing with kidney issues.  I also have PKD (Polysystic Kidney Disease).  Crohn's from mom and PKD from dad - gotta love those genes!  Normal creatine level is 0.5 to 1.2.  I don't really have any problems with my PKD and mine is 0.9.  When my dad's got to around 5.0 they started talking dialysis and at around 7.0 he went on dialysis.  Thanks to a VERY generous friend he got a kidney in March of 2008 and now his is 0.8!  I have never taken MTX, but I have to watch all meds to make sure they don't mess with my kidneys.  Good luck!

Thank you for your responses.

There is a history of kidney issues in my family. My dad has kidney stone problems, my mother has cysts (but they didn't diagnose her with a chronic disease), and my grandfather has the gout and thus a lot of kidney problems.

Crap, I'm not in the mood for a kidney problem.

If you go to the kidney formum on this site I'm sure you will get more answers. It's new but they have a lot of experience.

Meshice- that sounds just like my family tree. I think you are the first person I've heard of that has both PKD and Crohn's.
