I am looking for people who used prednisone for short periods of time. I was on the UC forum, and heard of people on it for 2 weeks, 10 days, and other periods. Have any of you been on prednisone for a short period? If you were, can you please tell me the exact dosage and for how long. Tapering is the important part of it. When I was on prednisone the first time, everything was normal after the first dosage of 40mg. It did not seem necessary to continue for 3.5 months.

I dont think anyone could tell you an EXACT dosage to take, your doctor can.  I think it all has to do with how bad you are flaring and such.  I was on 100mg for over a year, now when I feel a flare coming on I start at 60mg for 3 days, then 40mg for 3 days, 20 for a week, 10 for a week, then 5 for a couple days.  That does the trick for me, some people can take 30 or 40mg and feel good on that, for me it takes 60.

Surgeries:2 Bowel Resections, Gallbladder Removed.
Current Meds: Imuran 50mg, Vitamin B12 (injection), D, and C tablets. Fish Oil Tablets, Cats Claw, Slippery Elm, and Reishi.

I was on it now for just one week, and it was really nice.
I went from going to the toilet 15+ times a day to 2-3 times a day.

I was actually not taking the pred for Crohn's but for some allergy, but it did wonders for my tummy and when I take pred for such a short time I don't get the bad side affects, just love it, if my tummy starts acting up I am going to ask my doc for this short pred treatment

here is my dosage

day one 5 tablets 25 mg
day two 20 mg
day three 20 mg
day four 15 mg
day five 15 mg
day six 10 mg
day seven 10 mg
day eight 5 mg
24 year old female
Diagnosed with Crohn's disease in December 2008..
Medication - Asacol, Remicade, Cipralex and Cerazette.

Many people take short bursts of Pred for other conditions as Mag102886 said. I have on occasion taken short bursts of Pred for my Crohns. But I have had this disease for over 33 years and I do so with my GI's approval. I would talk to your GI about this and get his/her recommendation. Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendations. I am going to take a little break and then start it. I am not sure on the dosage or length, but I think it was you Nanners who told me before that 40mg is the magic number.

I forgot to ask how long these short bursts of prednisone put you into remission?

Everyone is different. It may not even work at all.  It may last a couple days, a month, or a year.  No one can tell you how long it will last, you just have to see what your body decides to do.

No it was not me who told you 40mg. I never start on a dose higher than 30 mg. Anything above that gives me way too many side effects. I do better with 30 mg. I have done 10 days bursts and had it quiet things down, other times I have had to bump back up and slow down the wean. Good luck!

I have been on and off pred. for many years.  I've had several doctors tell me that anything over 40 is a waste.  This was after several weeks at 60 & 80 mil.(PA wrote the script and I was not informed at the time)  I have been prescribed many times over the last 15 years what's called a prednisolone dose pack.  This is easy to take because it tapers for you.  I would check it out because of the ease of use.  Just be careful.  10 days is plenty because you will know if it is helping.  I wish I could do the taper pack.  Unfortunately I have been stuck at 35 mg. for 6 months.  Not all that unusual for me.  I call prednisone the wonder drug but only if it is a short course.  I have had Iatrogenic Cushing's Syndrome for years and it not fun.  My Adrenal System is a mess and trying to wean off has always been a major problem.  It takes me months t get off it.   Alas it is the only thing that has kept me relatively blockage free.  If it works for you do it but only as you say in short bursts.  You know your body best.
Good luck!
