I have been taking Imuran since the beginning of June 2009. For the first 3 weeks I felt so sick to my stomach and tired all the time..I started to question if taking this drug was worth it. I spoke to my GI and he said all of the symptoms I was having are related to my disease. I accepted that however the symptoms are now getting worse. I am having heart flutters, soreness in my lower back area + side. i also developed these tiny red dots all over my arms and chest. I also get winded easily.. which I attribute to being so tired all the time. Has anyone ever dealt with these symptoms on this treatment? I have 10 pt lower hemogloben however my doctor said " Nothing to worry about" and made me take a hepititis test. Of course which I don't have.

I need advice......

Can you go to your family doctor and get a blood test done to check for anemia? With you getting winded like that with the heart flutters, makes me think of anemia right away. Have you had your B12 checked? That might be another test to request. Something is going on, not sure if its the Imuran, disease or something else, but something is definetly going on. Good luck!

You shouldn't have red dots all over. Can you go to another doctor?

my husband was diagnoised in aug of 2008 with sever chrons and we tried the normal meds first with nothing helping. so they tried the imurane and he wound up losing about 10 layers of skin from his hands and feet and it was very painful. we stopped all meds in the end and as long as he watches what he eats he doesnt have near the problems he had to being with. we know he is not free and clear as his colonoscopys still show major problems but we are controlling with no meds.

Hello Beaglesx2 and Country Gurl 24! Welcome to the Forum!

Beaglesx2 -- How long have you had these symptoms? It does sound like it could be an allergic reaction. Maybe some benadryl could help in the short term. I agree that you should see another doctor and get to the bottom of it. Also, I am presuming you have 2 beagles -- is that right?

Country Gurl 24 -- What other meds did he try? There are many on this forum who had periods off of maintenance medications, but later they had serious problems needing surgery. With this disease it seems it is pay now or really pay later. A few appear to be OK on diet with no inflammation showing in tests, but it sounds like your husband is not one of them. Maybe there are other medications he can go on besides Imuran - -like remicade or humira.

Take care both of you and welcome again to the Forum!

Yeah i have 2 beagles..they are the light in this horrible situation. I thought of going to another doctor however it took me so long to get an appointment that it just seems like such a hassle to start all over again. I was hoping that maybe others may have had the same reaction as i was having could give me advice on how to deal. Guess since most of the responses are leading to see another doctor I think I will get a 2nd opinion...Thanks!

Hi Beagles. Maybe an Allergist who has experience in drug allergies? One option is calling your ER and asking to talk to an Allergist on call. The heart flutters could actually warrant a trip to the ER -- better safe than sorry!! Take care.

I was very fatigued with Imuran too the first few weeks. I am still fatigued, however it has evened out as I adjusted. My GI ran bloodwork to make sure the imuran didn't wipeout my immune system. I agree with everyone else here...you need to go to a ER.

***Always Notify Doctor:***

That sounds a bit dramatic re-reading it - however you should mention this to a doctor you trust, as it sounds like you're having side effects that should be addressed by a health care professional.

Have you had a liver panel done where they check your liver enzymes?   I was on 100 mg of Imuran about five years ago and my enzymes were very high.  I stopped the medication for a few years.

Recently I had a flare up and am now on 50 mg of Imuran per day as well as Remicade infusions every six to eight weeks.  I have a CBC, liver panel and sed rate and b-12 check every month.

It seems that by lowering the dosage of Imuran that my liver is handling it better this time around.

Good Luck!
