On Sunday morning I woke up with an abscess. It wasnt too painful, I went to church like normal and had a pretty good day. Then yesterday morning it got bigger. I called my Dr. because I was supposed to start coming off pred this week, and I didnt know what to do because I have never had an abscess. I have a doctors appt Friday at 2, but I just dont know if I can deal with this pain until then. I dont have insurance, and it is only 116 dollars to see my GI so my question is should I just wait until Friday and bare through the pain? I have heard that these anall abscesses can be pretty risky if they rupture inward? Is there anything I can do to ease the pain until then? Please, any advice would be appreciated.

Beca, i am in the same boat. Soak in ebson salts as much as possible. I am lucky to have lidocain also.neosporin with pain ingredient helps to some degree. A gauze 4x4 on the area protects it to some. Is it draining? Puss, blood, feces???? Where exactly is it located? I feel your pain. Now this is only what I do, I am NOT a doctor.

It has not drained at all. It is like right at the base of my butt cheek. it is further toward the front too. It just hurts really bad. I have been doing the sitz baths....just doesnt seem to be helping. I have some hemmie cream?? i just didnt want to put anything on it that would make it worse.

Beca and Mary Lynn!

I am so sorry you both are enduring this! Unfortunately, abscesses are dangerous. It is a pocket of trapped puss that will only get larger. They do not heal on their own and antibiotics can't get inside the abscess. It has to be drained. It might form a fistula and drain that way , but unforunately, that only makes things worse -- believe me it doesn't solve the abscess! I strongly recommend you go to the ER right away and see a colo-rectal surgeon. Make sure you tell them you have CD. I don't want to scare you any more than necessary so I won't go into horror stories. The faster you get it done, the smaller the damage and the faster you will heal. Pain med will only mask the pain -- not solve the abscess.

I am so sorry you are in this situation. Please let us know how it goes.

Again, I am NOT a doc. I do not feel that is going to help though. I come at this, with my hx in mind.Through the years,my efforts to "dryout" the areas, have been the most sucessful. If it has begun oozing, we go to a different angle. Perhaps others have a better idea than I. This has been an ongoing pain in my a__, since youth. Truely wishing you some relief.

Thanks for the input. I was praying someone would step in with advice for her. Unfort. my abscess has been drained again,my body just does not want to "play nice, and heal" yet. Putting off another 2 hour drive to my surgeon, who seems to love to operate on me. Good advice from FallColors!!

Hi Mary Lynn. I am sorry I am not understanding what you have. Are you saying you have had a draining abscess for years?

10/4 on masking the pain. It is not the answer.

Sorry MaryLynn. I think our posts crossed in the mail! I am so sorry that your drained abscess is taking so long to heal. I didn't have tube drains -- the whole abscess was cut open, scraped, and left to heal from the inside out. My biggest wound took about 3 months to close. But I haven't had any problems with any of them because they were opened up properly. It just takes too long!

Yuck.  I agree that hanging around with an abscess is not a good time.  I'd like to kick "Abby" to the curb and then run over him repeatedly!!  devil

I ignored a draining abscess for longer than I will admit.   nono     Low grade fever, etc.  Then it plugged and was turning black with sepsis.   shocked shocked   shocked     Once properly drained and treated, it finally, finally healed.  Dang thing nearly killed me.

I hate abscesses with a passion and so feel for others when they get one!!

Ask your hospital for charitable health cost forms. they should have them so you can reduce the cost of an emergency room visit. This is available in the US.

The seton part is what was discussed,no procedure done, not dreaming it,it ain't there. I am so frustrated with the lack of healing, fecal drainage, you know the drill. I would love to kick it to the curb, however I might break my toes!!
