I'm thinking of trying that to help give me regularity and solid formed stool. Mineral oil helps things slide out more smoothly but doesn't make you go. Any try either of these.

Mineral oil is not a good idea on a regular basis. It depletes oil soluble vitamins and Crohn's already does that, so you would become deficient. As for the fiber, it is a good idea, but many here have trouble from fiber supplements. There is one called Prodiem (thanks to PB4) that is well tolerated and I would suggest that you try that one by preference.

Maybe consider taking 2000-3000 mgs of cod liver oil a day (I like Carlson's). It's a bit more expensive than cheap, no-name fish oil, but it's waaayyy better! Cod liver oil provides essential omega 3s (natural anti-inflammatory) and other beneficial ingredients that we don't get enough of in our diets. It has been studied for its benefits for Crohn's and other inflammatory diseases, and it's bound to help with regularity. Might be worth a try!
Mom to 17 year old son diagnosed in June, 2007.
Omega 3s, digestive enzymes, probiotics, vit. C, calcium, vit. D3, a good multivitamin and SCD legal yogurt
Started The Maker's Diet in Sept. '07. Incorporate Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) recipes, too. Med-free.

My GI told me to take fibre supplements daily and indefinitely (it's been 5 yrs now) and it was the best advice I've ever gotten, formed stools (not constipated) no more mucus issues no more excessive gas and my bloating is completely gone all thanks to the fibre supplements.

Fibre aids with D or C so you shouldn't have to use mineral oil in conjunction with it...if you did find the fibre supplements causing you any issues with stools comming out then you're not drinking enough water on a regualr daily basis (or when you're taking the supplement), some people do use stool softners along with fibre supplements (again, not typically necessary if you're drinking enough water regularly).

metamucil and syntha-6 (best protein supplement I've taken and has 10g fiber per serving, don't take if your lactose sensitive) everyday for me.

I have taken the pills and the powder. Both are hard work!! I have also been eating All Bran buds which are packed with fibre and reduce the amount of Metamucil I need to take. I take the Metamucil at lunchtime, because you can't have it too close to other medications and I take pills in the morning and at night. I mix the All Bran buds with yogurt and some diced peaches and it is delicious.

I use the powder packets in orange flavor mixed in a glass of water, doesn't taste bad at all but, its only like 4g of fiber so you need to take it more than once per day. I also drink between 72-100oz of water a day. If you're out of flare mode and can handle fiber you should be around 30g per day through diet and supplements (according to my G.I and my research). I have a list of supplements that I take that me and some of my other crohnie friends feel are "some of the best" but, remember everybody is different.

I use "Prodiem" caps which is similar to metamucil caps, caps are best cuz they don't generally contain added sugar/preservatives/artificial sweetners and such (all which can actually exacerbate IBD symptoms).

Probiotics are fairly essential for IBDers as well, far as the fibre goes, if you have issues with blockages/strictures you should stick with low fibre but remember some fibre is still always better than none at all.

And always drink plenty of water daily (and especially with your fibre supplements).

Okay so I have been using Metamucil for 3 days now...and this morning after some initial Diahrea...a nice sized solid stool passed...with some discomfort but it still passed SOLID! I freaked out...hoped in the shower and got ready for work! as I was getting dressed felt the urgency to go again...and was blown away to pass two more HUGE solid stools with no rectal pain just a little discomfort in the lower colon...but I havent seen stool this size in YEARS!!! at least 10 years!!! I mean they were huge...
Has a lack of fiber in my diet for the past 6 years been the cause of this horrible onset of flare after flare after flare??? the constipation, the diahrea??? I mean Im still not feeling 100% good, in fact Im still feverish and stiff and a weak...but DARNET I took a regular CRAP!!!and felt relieved!!!

Man the things we take for granted! turn

It's important to stick with it even if you reach remission, as my GI said to me tkaing it daily and indefinitely is essential to help keep stools formed.

DAY 4 of Metamucil!!! HALLELUJAH!

I can not believe the BM's I am having!!! I can not believe it at all...I have had no Dahrea today and I have had 3 trips to the rest room and each time they were solid formed normal sized stool, even a little on the big side!

I have not seen stool like this from my booty since I was 20 years old!

after two years of on and off flares with remissions still giving me that unrelieved feeling and straining to poop out iregular shaped alien looking stools! I hope you all can understand why I am so happy....

Glad to hear it Doc, just be sure to continue with them even if you reach remission (as my GI suggested to me).

Metamucil Metamucil Metamucil!!! smilewinkgrin smilewinkgrin smilewinkgrin

Hey all I just wanted to follow up with this thread to let you all know I am still drinking it 3 times a day (breakfast lunch and dinner) I am feeling wonderful, the cramping has stopped, the diharea has stopped, the strainging to poop has stopped, the 6 to 7 trips to the restroom have stopped!)

I truly hope that having a fibre suplement in my diet has done the trick for me. and along withthe humira will continue to bring the remission I have been seeking.

You know people take going to the restroom for granted, especially when they just go and its always normal and they dont have to sit there for an hour...So for us crohnies when things are good we consider ourselves lucky for a change and enjoy the simplicity of going to take a crap and feeling like you took a crap vs. running back 20 minutes later and then another 30 minutes later...
