so, i haven't been feeling that great since june-ish?  i had an appointment with my gi last week and we decided on doing some stool studies.  wouldn't you know i tested POSITIVE for SALMONELLA?!?!?!  mind you, i got salmonella back in march.  and after a course if cipro i was feeling pretty good.  the best 3 months i have had in a few years since my crohn's started kicking into high gear.  i am scared to death that i won't get rid of it.  has anyone ever heard of or dealt with chronic salmonella?  i guess i should be glad we caught it now before i got any sicker but still ...i am so upset and so disgusted with the stupid lemon of a body.

Hi Stepanie,
Are you sure it's chronic, or did you just clear it up and get it again? I had salmonella a couple of winters ago. It took a long time to diagnose because my doc thought it was a Crohn's flare, and I was taking 40 mg of pred, which was only making everything worse...I was so sick that I lost about 25 lbs in a couple of months! I have had 3-4 more episodes since then of terrible D with mucous. I take Cipro for around 5 days and it clears it right up. We don't test the stool every time, so besides the initial diagnosis I don't know if the recurrences are actually Salmonella. My doc thinks that IBD patients are just more prone to bacterial gut infections. I just have Cipro on hand with a bunch of refills, and take it if my D gets bad. I am usually constipated, so when it switches to massive D, it's pretty noticeable! I also take probiotics, and I think that helps. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

i am pretty sure it's the same case. i was deathly ill when i got it in march and since june i have just been fighting bad days. upwards of 10 times in the bathroom, a lot of nausea and pain. maybe i wasn't given enough cipro last time? and having a compromised immune system to continue fighting it off i am sure doesn't help. i am just realizing that i did not get re-tested after my last bout. once again, VERY glad i made a gi change!! i am sure my last gi would have shrugged off me being sick and i would continue to get worse. ...but that's another post ;)

i am sure my new gi will re-test me after my 2 weeks of cipro. i am just shocked i never got rid of it and really hope this is the last i will see of it. i am really scared it will come back again. well, at least i know feeling sick wasn't all in my head!

thanks for your reply!

You know, it's odd - they have done lots of research on controlling Salmonella in chickens using probiotic bacteria. They want to avoid creating antibiotic resistant bacteria. But just try to find comparable information about Salmonella in people!

Anyway, the point of the above is, try adding some probiotics to your regimen. Align (brand name) is probably a good bet, or possibly Culturelle. Heck, try both on alternating days. They are different, but both have demonstrated benefits for gut problems.

Makes me wonder about what I'm going through. I got sick in May, very different than my normal cd flares. No one tested for anything. I have had d ever since and that is not typical for me. Pred, which usually helps, isn't. Going in for a scope tomorrow. I will have to ask about this type of thing.

also, I have lived in different places and some supermarkets display chicken that is beyond expiration, so i would start on insisting they provide fresh or find another market. Chicken is great in low fat, but even the slightest hint of getting close to expiration i can immediately tell after eating, especially when on cipro as I get that back and forth bowel motion.

heatmiser - i would suggest a stool culture be done. it could even been another bacterial infection or a bacteria over-growth. i know, not fun but maybe they will find something. when i got sick with it back in march i was in the bathroom every 20-30 minutes to the point of passing massive amounts of blood, not to mention not making it to the bathroom. i had all over abdominal pain, i only had a slight fever except the first night, i almost passed out while in the bathroom. i laid on the floor till i could get enough strength to crawl back to bed. it was terrible!! this went on for 5 days, violently without being able to eat. then for 3 months i felt great and then i pains, increased bathroom trips/d up to 10 times a day. that's when we decided to dig deeper. hope your scope went as good as it can. and good luck!
