Hi Bev

Crohn's is definitely included in the list of conditions for DLA. There's a really good section on the NACC website. I know someone who has got this - mostly care component but if you get DLA you can get other benefits as well if you are unable to work. She had bad D every day and lost loads of weight/was weak etc now has had treatment (Remicade) and is doing better, even going to college again. I have been advised to try for it but although I am having a serious flare I don't have the everyday symptoms that seem commonplace for others. The advice I have been given though (by my social worker friend) is that you must get help from a benefits rights worker/Citizens Advice Bureau to fill it in as wording is everything and we tend to underplay our illness. It's worth a try, especially as it's not 'means-tested' and can help to allay some of the financial worries if you have to work part-time or lose pay through sickness levels.

Good luck!!

Diagnosed aged 31 in 1996 - emergency surgery (right hemicolectomy). Thought I'd only get 'it' once and have lived in relatively blissful ignorance, apart from a couple of hospital stays for obstructions (scar tissue), until March 09....major surgery, 2 resections, fistula and now only 195cm small bowel left. Not on any meds at present except B12 injections but know there will be some. Just getting used to my 'new' body and it's limitations........ July 09 hospital stay for obstruction & tests show disease back: now on Asacol and waiting to see which treatment I'm put on
