Has anyone had the double balloon enteroscopy? My doc has scheduled me for the procedure next month at the Mayo. I need to be sure it's worth it as I have to pay 50% co-pay because the Mayo is "out of network" for my insurance. Does anyone know of any docs in florida that do the procedure other then Dr. Stark at the Mayo? I understand there are only a few, but i need to find someone who is on my "approved provider" list. Is the procedure so good that i'll get much more accurate info on the extent of my cd? Also, my doc says they will do a biopsy to check for cancer.

Well it is the only test other than the pill camera that lets them directly visualize the entire small bowel, so it has real diagnostic value and also allows the taking of biopsies. Of course the pill cam is close in effectiveness and much less invasive (and I would suspect also cheaper and more readily available) but if they do feel the need to biopsy your small bowel this is the only way to go.

Thanks for your input, Mike. Well, i did do the camera procedure a couple of months ago. The problem was the camera got stuck and i ended up in the hospital for 6 days before it passed. I avoided surgery, but not sure if that was good or bad - perhaps surgery would give me relief for awhile . . . the meds don't seem to be helping much although i guess i should be thankful because i haven't had another blockage!

from my understanding double-ballon enteroscope and double-ballon dilation. I have signed up double-ballon dilation, next month I have consult scheduled to find out if I am eligible for such a procedure. Will let you know if the select me for the process, because my GI thinks I have significant narrowing hence the chance of perforation is high. Therefore, they might not perform the procedure on me. At any rate, this sounds like a procedure that might give short term relief, but not permanent relief.
