OK guys, need some help/advice.  My 8 yr old was dx with Crohns in 4/09.  She is on Remicade.  I'm just wondering how much more susceptible she is to getting generalized ailments (cold, flu, stomach bug, etc.)  It is my understanding that her entire immune system is not supressed being on the Remicade as it would be if she would be on prednisone or say, 6MP, but I am concerned.  I'm also contemplating whether or not to get her the swine flu vax since the FDA is not standing behind it (IE you cannot sue if you experience side effects from it).  This makes be a bit leary.  Her GI has not given me an answer one way or another, only that she would have to consult with infectious disease to give me a recommendation.  Anyway, I'm thinking if she does get the flu, I should just get her to the doc & get a dose of Tamiflu.  Thoughts?????

My husband takes remicade, and he hasn't really been plagued by infections, he's been doing pretty normal really. We had a doctor's appt this morning with his GI, and I asked him about the swine flu vaccine. He looked it up, and said that because it isn't a live or attenuated vaccine, it should be safe for folks who take remicade to also take. He said it's pretty much like the regular flu vaccine.

So, I'm pretty sure my husband and I will be in line to get the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Thus far, I haven't seen anything indicative of the swine flu vaccine being harmful, and according to his GI, as long as it is not a live or attenuated vaccine, it should be safe to take.

Thanks PV, I really appreciate your input. I'm very neurotic when it comes to illness. I keep thinking that she will be hospitalized and will get very ill. I guess that with Remicade, although the immune system is "partially" compromised, it is not entirely compromised like an immodulator drug (Imuran, 6MP, etc). I know I can't prevent her from getting sick, eventually it happens to the best of us, I just have to pray that when the time comes, it won't be anything too serious

I've been on remicade for almost 5 years, and I am the healthiest in my family. I teach in 4 different schools and I have 2 school age children so I am around and in millions of germs! I didn't even have a cold last year! So, I wouldn't worry about it, just take the normal precautions, like hand washing.
