VSL#3 is some huge number - over 200 million cfu's (colony forming units) per dose. One million is probably a bit low. There are many capsules that offer 10 - 12 million cfu's. Bear in mind that the number of bacteria in your gut is something like 10 - 100 trillion bacteria.

Great question, I've been wondering about this, I'm only taking one acidophillus tablet at the moment and wasn't sure if it was enough.

Elaine Gottschall says one cup of home made yogurt has 700 billion beneficial bacteria in it.  This link says 3 billion in a tablespoon, and from a "small bowl" of home made yogurt "you would receive 1.5 trillion beneficial bacteria - 100 times more bacteria than a 15 billion capsule."
This is a GREAT link!!!
JMO, but it seems to me you just can't get too many beneficial bacteria in your gut.  Prior to last century, our ancestors got beneficial bacteria from nearly everything they put in their mouths... Now we're at the other end of the spectrum, getting beneficial from almost NOTHING we put in our mouth--unless we make sure its there by eating fermented foods...

I take Primadolphilus Reuteri, and it has 5 billion CFU in it. I like it because you only have to take one a day. You can find it in the refrigerated section at your local healthfood store. (Thanks PB4!)

The only way I have been able to tell how much of a probiotic I should take is to start with one and see how I feel. If I can tolerate that, I go to two a few days later. There have been times when I have taken 12 a day of one brand.

The problem I have run into in selecting a brand is that each brand has a different set of probiotics. What works for one person at one dose may not have any impact on someone else.

I just read an article that supports something I have believed for a long time. It said that it is not the quantity of bacteria in the product but the quality of that specific product.

There is one possible side effect to starting a new probiotic. If you have a yeast overgrowth in your intestines, a probiotic (good bacteria) will start to kill off the yeast (bad bacteria) and possibly cause some very interesting gas and maybe even bloating problems.

I too buy Primodophilus Reuturi by Natures Way, for my daughter,(PB4). The only concern I have is, I wonder if they are handled properly during shipment, and at the store, as they do have to be refrigerated. Does anyone else ever share this concern?
My daughter was diagnosed Feb. 19/07, (13 yrs. old at time of diagnosis), with Crohn's of the Terminal Illium. Has used Prednisone and Pentasa. Started Imuran (02/09), had an abdominal abscess (12/08). 2cm of Stricture.

I've been told that even if they're not refrigerated they won't be useless, it's just the more they're kept cold the better. I can almost guarantee you they are not refrigerated completely from production to retail store as it adds to the cost. But who knows, maybe they are...

Primadophilus reuteri is a good one. Also Culturelle contains a strain that has been well researched and optimized for use as an intestinal aid. I also still think that using a probiotic that has an enteric capsule is a good plan. Stomach acid and enzymes kill off up to 90 - 99% of bacteria except for some particularly hardy ones (Culturelle).
