Hi Carmen,
I have been taking codeine for at least 30 years 30mg twice daily.  I'm on it so long now that I don't think it would be safe to come off it.  I have to take it for diarrah (sp !)  Have you just started or are you on it a long time.

I take codeine occasionally, for joint pain and diarrhea--far less often than my very experienced doctor recommends. He says that you can't become an addict if you take a constant, small dose of codeine for a valid, prescribed reason. The reason that I don't take it frequently is that, since I can't drink alcohol (both because of Crohn's and because I'm on 6MP), the codeine provides the only relaxing buzz I ever get, except for hot baths--and I'm afraid that if I take it every day, I'll lose that effect. So I only take the codeine when I've absolutely run out of energy to deal with the pain or the endless trips to the bathroom. I'm reliably informed (by my doctor and others), though, that daily codeine to deal with CD symptoms will not hurt you.

I take 90-150mg every day for diarrhoea, been on it probably about 7 years. Only thing thats ever worked for me! The only thing that sucks is when I am in pain nothing can help as my tolerance to opiods is so high now!
