Just an update on what I have observed with my daughter recently.  We did a bit of end of summer travel and then had company for almost two full weeks.  During all of this we were faithful to her calcium, multi vit and Pentasa. We abandoned her probiotics and omegas as both are best refrigerated and we weren't home much.  Boom, flare up.  I wondered if it's at all possible that Crohn's reared it's ugly head due to lack of beneficial bacteria from the absence of the probiotics.  So... I doubled up, and then some more. Rather than giving her one VSL#3 daily, I started giving her one, plus a Culturelle first thing in the AM; then another probiotic by customprobiotics.com called 6-Strain right after school/midday; then at night another VSL#3.  Guess what?  about a week or more into this and Crohn's seems to be backing away. (Hope I'm not speaking too soon...there's always tomorrow.) Right now, no gas, no stomach aches the last few days.  Only toileting once per day on average.

Could it be that her remission depends on probiotics?  Anyone else have this experience?

Also, since we are fairly new to dealing with her Crohn's... is it common to experience "mild" flare ups that come and go without needing to run to the doctor?  Should I panic every time she complains of diarrhea and mild stomach aches, or do I assume this is the onset of an all-out Crohn's episode?  Just not sure what to expect.

Thanks.

One thing about probiotics - it can take a few days for the gut to get into a new equilibrium once you change your dosages. That can be accompanied by gas and changes to the output. This is true for discontinuing them as well - as you did when you went on holidays. Holidays can also be stressful, which can trigger a flare all by itself.

As for the mild flareups, I am a bad one to ask about that. I avoid doctors unless something is serious or long-standing. Even then, I don't quite trust doctors to get to the root of the problem. Medical treatment is not something that you want to seek unless you can't avoid it.

I can tell you that probiotics helped me to have less bathroom visits. Before the probiotics I was going about 4-6 times a day, afterwards I now only go 1-3 times a day, mostly 1-2 times. So for me they helped to firm things up a little.

As for flares, I generally allow myself about 1 week. If things don't improve by then, I see my doctor. Because sometimes it can be a stomach bug, or too much stress causing my increase in symptoms. So I have always lived by that 1 week rule. Hope that helps.

I notice a difference if I don't take them.   Do you think the change in your daughters "norm" could have caused her to flare up?

Hmmm. I wonder if it's true then...that the change in gut flora from not taking probiotics regularly for a few weeks caused a mild flare for her.  I'm thinking of making my own SCD style yogurt for her. I read that there are literally trillions of probiotics in that and that for that reason it blows a probiotic capsule outta the water in so far as colonizing the gut with healthy bacteria.

Current flare seems to be getting better, altho she still does not have formed stools.  Will she EVER have formed stools, or am I expecting something that is just not gonna happen for her?  I keep thinking that a formed regular bowel movement from her will indicate remission.
