Avoid salt and foods with salt at all costs. That only adds to the retention problem. Also, if possible - walk. When you get moving, the circulation picks up, filtering the blood through the kidneys faster allowing the excess fluid to be processed and gotten rid of. When you sit, keep those feet elevated.
My PCP had to prescribe lasix to deal with the edema I got from large doses of prednisone.
