I had the weirdest test results from a pill cam test that I did a month ago and have not been able to find out what it means. This is actually the third time that I have done this test in the past 5 years and only did it because I have been failing on Cimzia and the biopsies from my last colonoscopy showed inflammation in the T.I. THis was not really that odd for me because from the get go my disease has always showed some mild to severe inflammation in the T.I., but the pain has been getting worse. I have been on Cimzia for about a year now and am usually pretty sick so a colonoscopy was warranted. Then they did the pill cam test. Normally my G.I. gets my results back to me pretty quick but his time it took a month to get the results and he said that he did not see any visible active Crohn's but saw what appeared to be metallic like items and today I did a Small Bowel Series. When they said that they saw these items, I of course asked his M.A. what that meant and she had no idea. Has anyone else had anything similar? I have to also send in a stool sample but I am waiting until all that darn barium has passed through me because I don't want to mess up with the results. I live quite a ways from my G.I. because I wanted to go to a better one than the locals, but I do the majority of my tests at the local hospital because it is top notch. When they did the small bowel series, nothing showed up and the person that did the second part of the test under the floriscope looked at me like I was crazy when she looked at my records and all of the medicines that I have been on. She said that the cimzia must be working because she was not seeing any inflammation but of course the inflammation was found in the biopsies.
When I was diagnosed many in 2004 I was diagnosed through a pill cam and the inflammation was higher up but was no obvious. I have always had more of the external manifestations and have not had any bleeding since May, yet the pain is still there along with really bad arthritis and fatigue. I would give anything to be able to go back on Remicade even for the 1 week that it was working. I am not trying to sound negative but am truly confused this time. Metallic structures or items? I have heard of an iron gut but I promise that I do not have one of them. I asked why they thought it could be metaliic and she said because it was reflective and there were multiple items. This made me go back and look at a few up the pics from my last scope and sure enough there were some reflective specks there, but I figured it was just from the picture. Anyone have any ideas? I promise that I do not eat metal as it is too expensive but I do recycle.

You are supposed to unwrap those Hershey kisses . . .

Seriously, I have no idea, but I believe it is not uncommon for items to be retained in the gut for some time. I have seen colonoscopy pictures and Xrays of all sorts of ingested items just lying around in there. I wonder if any of the meds you take have some coatings that are not totally dissolving and being retained.

Did you ever break a thermometer in you mouth when you were a kid? Ever take coliddal (sp?) silver?

Seriously do you prepare every meal you eat?

Never put tacks in your mouth when you hang pictures. Gee, I'm at a loss here for what could cause this. I think you need to talk to the doctor about it. It could be some product you use at home. By best guess is a lining of some food packaging that is coming off in the food. Most have some foil in them. Have you noticed lumps in your beer ? Perhaps you swallowed a pop top ...

Maybe it's from biting the bullet for all those years with Crohn's?

Hope your doc is able to sort this out for you; it's weird having things that are mysteries in your body.

Until you figure this out, be VERY careful not to let anyone schedule you for an MRI. You absolutely don't want to be in a room with an MRI machine if you have any metal inside (or on) your body.

On another note, have you tried enteral nutrition (special liquid formula diet to induce remission) as a treatment option? It sounds like you are having trouble finding effective treatment options, and sometimes it will work when nothing else does.

Good luck with the metal detection. I hope you find hidden treasure.

Just had an idea. Have you had dental work lately ??? You may have swallowed some small particles from a drilled filling .

that is something that i have not even considered. I have had quite a bit of dental work done lately. (I hate prednisone) That makes a lot more sense.

That could be it. I know they dont get all of it with that suction thing. I swallow some of it for sure when they redo a filling. I always wondered how long it stayed around in my gut. That could be why they wait until they have ten things in your mouth to ask you a question,,so you dont notice what you swallow . Maybe we can crap jewelry after a dentist visit.
