Hi all,

Back story - I was diagnosed with Crohn's last February (after having severe stomach pain since October), and started on Pentasa and Nexium. I was feeling pretty good after being on the drugs for a month or so. Had a not-so-fun time when I discovered my prescription coverage was only $1500 and hit that pretty fast. As I waited to get approved for patient assistance (i'm a grad student - so nice and poor!), I cut my doses to make the meds last longer and had a very bad flare-up in May as a result. Since getting back on the meds as I should, I felt pretty good for about a month. For the last couple months I have had a return of pain similar to what I first experienced - but much milder and much less frequent. I do not want to go on steroids unless I have too, so I thought I would do a gluten-free diet for a bit to experiment - see if I could manage symptoms through diet.

I would love to know what others experiences with going gluten-free are. Did it work? How long did it take to notice improvement? How strict are you? It's been less than 2 weeks and I have been trying to be really strict about it - although, with gluten hidden in so many things I'm sure I've made mistakes. Please share your experience and any advice or tips you may have!!!

I strictly follow SCD, which is gluten free. I felt results pretty quickly, but then SCD also restricts sugar, lactose, and starch. I've had to learn to cook most everything from scratch, because like you said, gluten and whatnot is is everything. Read labels very carefully, and shop at store like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. They carry a lot of gluten free products. Some restaurants have gluten free menus these days, like Outback Steakhouse.

Good luck!
