While I don't take Humira at this point (that might change tomorrow when I see my doc), the reason you load up with 4 shots is for the induction phase, or to induce remission. The standard protocol would then have you transition to one shot (40mg) every other week for most folks. Some take a shot every week. Your doc should be able to explain it to you.

Thanks so much for your response.
How do you like 6MP? I didn't like it that much.
Diagnosed with crones for 3 years. Pentasa put it in remission. Disease is now active again, going on 6mp. Still able to live every day to it's fullest.

Funny you should ask. I've been on it 4 months and I decided to stop taking it last night. I see my doc tomorrow to tell him the good news. I never had any tangible side effects like hair loss or elevated liver enzymes. My WBC went down initially and then it went back up - weird. Basically, for the past 6-8 weeks I've felt slightly nauseous, slight, but persistent abdominal discomfort, and general malaise. My issues are all in the rectum and my stomach never hurts, but this was going on 24/7. I also got diarrhea, which I think is unrelated to the Crohn's. I didn't have run to the bathroom D, my BMs just got softer and softer. I totally chalk it up to the 6MP.

I expect tomorrow we'll discuss remicade and humira.

I am starting Humira soon, too. They are going to give me 4 shots in my abs. :( I am scared. I heard you can take it in your leg.

Nostra don't be scared. The stomach shots are much better for some reason. Not as painful. Don't know why. Listen, we have all been dealing with Crohn's. Some little shots are really nothing compared to all that we have endured. Besides, the shots hurt only while you are getting them. The pain subsides almost immediately. You'll see. Good luck. Hope it works for everyone.

I'm on Humira and Pentasa. I haven't seen any bad side effects from either. I take the Humira in my leg. It hurts but only for a minute then it goes away. I figure a minute of pain is worth the remission.

dm,
I used to take Humira and had wonderful results for 3 years. But sadly I developed the antibodies to it. Darn. It was a great 3 years though.
No serious side effects at all. Just some minor redness, itching and swelling at the injection site. I did take Benadryl one hour before the Humira per my doctor.

My doc refers to it as the uptake dosage.  In other words, you get alot of the drug on board so that you don't bottom out before your next dose.  After that, you should have a steady amount of the drug in you.  It really sucks though doesn't it?  I don't know about you but those shots hurt a LOT.  I recently switched over to the injectable version and I'm not sure its any better because it goes in so S L O W L Y.  It's a no win with me I'm afraid.  I just brace myself and let my husband do the jabbing.  Good luck.  I hope it works out well for you.  I've been on it for about 2-yrs now.

Been in remission for short periods of time but each time I come out of remission my disease seems to have spread.  No longer isolated in my ileum, now from stomach down to rectum.

Previous Medications I've been on:  Asocal, Pentasa, Cipro, Prednisone, Flagyl, Vancomycin & Entocort
