I started a z-pack (antibiotics) last night for strep and within an hour, I was doubled over in pain. After about 30 minutes, the explosions started and I was on the toilet for hours. Anyone else had this kind of reaction to antibiotics??

I remember feeling like that after one dose of Lialda.  I never took it again or any other drug that had the same ingrediant.  It sounds like a allergic reaction.  I would call your doctor immediately.  I was about 2 minutes away from going to the hospital when everything subsided.

Feel better.

I've taken it many times before, but never during a flare. Normally, it has no effect on me.

Its not uncommon for us to have stomach reactions to antibiotics, but like everything else, which antibiotic is individual. I can take Z-packs, I just finished one, but I get really bad stomach (CD) pains from Doxy. I actually refused to take it for many years because it would just double me over in pain. But now I have developed anaphylactic (sp?) reactions to so many antibiotics that I sometimes have to take the Doxy because it is the best antibiotic for the job.

Managing with strict low residue diet, keeping symptoms to a minimum. All test show small amount of ulceration, still have occasional blockages. But still have a great time with my 2 daughters and husband!

I get the same reaction with Z-packs. The pains come in waves but they're very strong. Last time I took it I called the on call dr in the middle of the night, thinking something else had to be wrong. I won't be taking it again.

I took a Z-Pak a couple years ago for bronchitis and it didn't do any thing bad to my Crohn's. For the record, it didn't do anything for the bronchitis, either.
Diagnosed with CD July 2007
Currently on Remicade, Imuran, probiotics, folic acid, multivitamin.

My daughter never has any trouble with Z-Pack. I, on the other hand, find the first dose (2 pills) especially rough - am sensitive even to ingredients in multivitamins.

BUT the doc told me to take a probiotic two hours after taking the Z-Pack (not sooner, or it would interfere with the med). So  I took just one pill of Solgar's Advanced 40+ Acidophilus and it worked like a charm. THe probiotic has 1.5 billion microorganisms:

Lactobacillus Acidophilus - 300 million
L. rhamnosus GG - 300 million

L paracasei - 300 million

B. lactis - 300 million

S thermophilus, 300 million
