Does anyone know of a *good* liquid supplement other than Ensure? I am trying to avoid all of that sugar. Thanks!

i got the idea for making a raw egg smoothie when i answered a post similar... 1 raw egg white, a teaspoon olive oil, ice, water, honey and flavoring like a piece of canned pear. Most of the nutrition drinks are very potent so i dont recommend them, and energy drinks have vitamins, especially B, but loads of sugar. I have been wanted to buy the vitamin B6 supplement (P5P version) havent yet tho.

Meal replacement drinks (liquid supplements) all include a carbohydrate component because human beings need protein, fat, and carbohydrates to survive. So the choice of carbohydrate comes down to a sugar or to a simple starch (maltodextrin) which breaks down into simple sugars. Including complex carbohydrates (e.g., whole grains) defeats the point of having an easy-to-digest liquid supplement; then you are back to a regular diet. There is nothing wrong with sugar or simple starches, our body breaks down complex carbohydrates into simple sugars anyway. It's only a problem if we fill our diets with sugary foods that don't have any other nutrients in them (e.g., no protein, no micronutrients), whereas drinks such as Ensure provide complete nutrition.

I buy something called "Nutren" made by Nestle. It can be purchased from some pharmacies. I buy it online. It comes in 1.5x and 2x calorie formulas so you don't have to drink as many. It has less sugar and more fat, which helps with keeping weight on, but the taste is not that great. I have also used Nestle's Peptamen which is semi-elemental. Taste is pretty bad.

Alternatively you can buy "Ensure Plus," which has a lower % of calories coming from carbs versus regular Ensure.

Consuming raw eggs brings a small risk of salmonella poisoning. I wouldn't do it.

I also agree that there is nothing wrong with sugar in moderation.  When you look at the sugar to calorie ratio of ensure it's not unreasonable.  It's not like drinking a can of coke or eating a donut.

when I was younger (Middle school) I made Egg Nog at home for breakfast. Using raw eggs, milk and spices. I never onve got sick from it. But then again the Raw whole milk with the cream on top came right from our cows that week milked on our farm, and so did the eggs.

Exactly.  My great-grandpa apparently would milk a cow and drink the still warm milk right there in the barn.  Now we don't know what has happened between the farmer and the store.

i've never taken the shakes before but I plan to if I get a flare (elemental diet supposed to be as effective as prednisone and I HATE prednisone). I heard they taste pretty good. The only issue with these shakes is that they use maltodextrin which is supposed to feed bad bacteria according to SCD rules, but I would still use them instead of prednisone or even ensure. Ensure is whack in my opinion (just an opinion). I used to drink that stuff a lot before I was diagnosed!

i think it's only available online and I know it's darn expensive. I guess it's worth a shot. The maker of the shake had crohn's herself.

Just an FYI (from a professional in the food business).  Salmonella is in the egg yolk, not the white.  If you eat the raw whites with absolutely no yolk, you will be fine.

I buy Pedialyte, used to help little kids stay balanced with electrolytes, they work great :) I'm tiny tho but I would think it would work for adults too, its so hard for us with the constant D to keep the electrolytes up!!

Hmmm...whole books have been written about what is wrong with sugar. Honey could be substituted for sugar.
