I've sometimes experienced loud gurgling sounds emanating from my gut.  It seems like it can happen at any time of day, but particularly later in the day (perhaps after I've eaten?)  If accompanied by discomfort or a buildup and release of pressure, it can be an indication that I'm about to flare.  My doctor -- and several other sources -- have said that gurgling can be caused by strictures.  This seems possible to me, particularly if the gurgling originates from the same place on my stomach each time.  Sometimes, however, all of the different parts of my stomach will gurgle.  In this case, could it just be natural disgestion?  Is anyone aware of any additional causes?  Thnx :-)

Mine is from my stricture. There is some normal gurgling, too. So it might not all be Crohn's-related.
Diagnosed with CD July 2007
Currently on Remicade, Imuran, probiotics, folic acid, multivitamin.

Stricture or not, the noise is due to gas passing through the gut. There are several bends and valves that it has to pass through, to say nothing of the solid contents of the gut that it has to squeeze past, so some noise is normal. This gas is a by-product of bacterial action. If you are getting a lot of it, it means that you have a lot of bacterial growth happening. If this growth is happening in the small intestine, it indicates a problem in the making. Ordinarily, the passage of gut contents through the SI is fairly rapid and this flushes bacteria through into the large intestine which is more able to handle bacteria. If it is slow, bacteria multiply in the SI and compete for food with your digestive system. This can result in diarrhea, constipation or both along with fatigue and nausea. It may also produce acid reflux. Over time, this condition can cause problems for your gallbladder and pancreas due to bacterial infiltration from the SI into these organs.

I don't think gurgling sounds alone are an indication that something is wrong. I don't have IBD or IBS, and my tummy makes a lot of noise. Especially after a meal, and if I lie down right after a meal. I think it's just normal sounds of digestion and peristalsis, and gas moving around inside. I make enough noise to be mistaken for a coffee maker sometimes.

One thing I've noticed though is that my husband's stomach (he has Crohn's) is usually quiet. But when he starts having tummy issues, there's some noise involved, and I think it maybe because of trapped gas in the digestive tract.

I have also heard that the gurgling sounds can be caused by strictures/narrowing in the digestive tract.

So, I don't think stomach noise in itself mean anything - even healthy people like me make a lot of noise. But if it is combined with pain, or cramping, or a change in the stool etc. I think it could be a sign of disease activity.

My daughter did have a stricture in the TI, but her gurgling quieted down substantially when she started eating yogurt.

It's all a matter of degree - just about everybody has gurgling, but in her case it was extremely loud, could be heard across the room.
