hello.  haven't been on here for a couple years.  had a flare up few months ago.  I jumped on the prednisone too quick and this time this flare seems to be a doozy so i'm off to to the doc again for another colonoscopy and talk about new treatments.  I currently take Colazol and Rowasa (and now 30mg of Pred).  I tried Remicade 2 years ago to no prevail (bad side effects).  Also, tried Entocort with no help as well.  Anyways, does anyone know of any NEW "maintenance" drugs for UC/Crohn's other than the standards Colazal, Asacol, Immuran, purinethol, rowasa, etc.?  (and for clarification, I'm not referring to the "hardcores" like Cimzia, Tysabri, Humira, etc.)  Any help or info would be much appreciated, thanks! :)

Out of interest, what was your username when you were a member a few years ago?

We have lots of long-termers here: we might remember you :-)

Welcome back, though sorry about your flare.

did you forget about Methotrexate? Its usually best taken by subcutaneous shots. Also, don't forget the power of diet (SCD), and herbals.  SCD helps for me somewhat, although I usually only have enough will power to adhere to it during a flare up.  Other than that, it seems like most new drugs have been of the "hardcore" nature.

Haven't heard of any new maintenance drugs, just retooling of Asacol into larger doses: Lialda, Apriso, Asacol HD.

I added in Xifaxan a few years ago as an off-label usage. Its an antibiotic used for travelers D, but it is used off label for CD. I use it with 6MP and a very low dose of Prednisone. Until I added that in I was unable to get below 20mg of Prednisone for any length of time. Now I have cut my bathroom trips down from 15 -20 a day down to 5 - 8 and I am able to stay at about 7mg of Prednisone. Since I have been on steroids for so long I may never get off entirely, but I will take a low dose. The side effects at 7 are not even noticeable compared to 20mg or higher.

I do have to get my insurance to approve the prescription. But the drug manufacturer basically buries them in research paper and it gets approved in no time, usually for a year at a time. I take 400mg, 3 X day. The normal dosage is nine pills, so pharmacies don't usually have it in stock in this quantity, so you would have to wait for it to come in. But it is something you might want to look into.

Managing with strict low residue diet, keeping symptoms to a minimum. All test show small amount of ulceration, still have occasional blockages. But still have a great time with my 2 daughters and husband!

Prednisone, 6MP,Prevacid, B12 shots, Bentyl, Xifaxan.....
