Sounds like a great conference, but pricey.

My GI doc is presenting a couple of times at that. I'll make sure I ask her about it at my next appointment.

I read through the (long) list of abstracts. Why are none of our doctors presenting on the effects of diet in IBD patients? It seems like everything is about drugs. I feel like I've had more success with diet than any drug so far.

Interestingly enough though, there are 2 different presentations on the effects of influenza shots on IBD patients. Since diagnosis in 2007, I have had 3 flu shots and each one has resulted in a flare within a few days.

Probably because there's nothing to present since there haven't been any recent controlled clinical trials on diet modification that I'm aware of. This is unfortunate.

Here's something interesting about one of the presentations:

IBD said...
Evidence suggests that pathogenic mechanisms of Crohn’s disease may change with time, and the research abstract to be presented at the conference describes recessive mutations in the IL-10 receptor alpha and beta that may be causative for Crohn’s disease. The abstract was submitted by Dr. Bodo Grimbacher of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Pathology, Royal Free Hospital and University College London, and has recently been published in the New England Journal of Medicine (www.nejm.org, 11/4/09).

Sounds like IL-10 may be another new research direction. Stelera/Ustekinumab targets IL-12 and IL-23, and I guess the other anti-integrins (vedolizumab, tysabri) do too.

Here's a press relaese about some awards that were given out there:

I just read the new biologics presentation and it's a great read about all the new biologics in development (unfortunately many of them have been "halted").
