well I am getting a CT scan tomorrow. I am having to take pre meds b/c I am allergic to the dye. I sure hope they work. Has anyone else had to do this b/c of allergies? I wonder why they just don't order an MRI for the abdomen. I at least hope the pre meds work. I am a little afraid b/c my asthma has been acting up.

I hope things went well for you w/this CT scan today, Jeanneac. 18 months ago I asked my Mayo Clinic gastro about the MRI for Crohn's and he said that so far the CT scan is still superior to the MRI except for the rectal area.

Thanks Chronie too. Ha! You'll never believe what happened. The tech gave me the wrong drink and so we had to cancel my enterography! I am going back on the 29th... Sigh......

How do you know you are allergic to the contrast? Have you had a previous reaction and if so, was it severe? If it consisted of a rash/hives I would not worry to much. But if it consisted of shortness of breath I would think long and hard about agreeing to the contrast.
You know, you can have the test done without IV contrast. It's not as diagnostic but it may be an option if you have had a previous severe reaction.

I'm alergic to IV contrast, and have been premedicated for CT's twice this year, and didn't have any problems. What prep meds did they have you take?

My reaction before was large hives and then they gave me benadryl and prednisone. Since then, I have developed some asthma, so that has me a little worried. I think it is mostly from the bad air pollution in my town-:)

They had me take 50 mg of prednisone, 100 mg of benadryl and 150 zantac 12 hours before the procedure and then again at 2 hours before the procedure.

Yes, I have had CT scans w/out the contrast dye before. I suspect it comes out better with the dye though.

Happy Holidays!

If they are assessing mucosal thickening you would greatly benefit from the IV contrast. If they are ruling out an abscess you could probably do without it.
