Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out what's going on.. I'm sort of confused. I was hospitalized a couple of weeks ago because of this pain that I've been having. It's around my bellybutton (tenderness there, so I assume it originates there), but I feel it all over my stomach.. It's worse than I've ever had, getting a lot of nausea too, no D though, haven't had any in months. I also get chills with my pain, like always. I've always had this pain, just not to the same degree, so whatever it is is getting worse. So far they haven't been able to figure out what's causing it, because overall, my Crohn's does seem to be improving (except this).

The reason why I'm sort of confused is because I got a UTI right after I got out of the hospital (couple of days later). I went on Cipro for 6 days (my boss gave me the pills because I couldn't get in to see a doctor, I know it's usually only a few days of Cipro, but I figured taking them all couldn't hurt.) While I was on Cipro, after about a day, my pain was 100% gone. It stayed totally gone until 2 days after I stopped taking the Cipro. I've never had no pain since this all started, so it leads me to believe that the Cipro must have been helping whatever it is. However now the pain seems to be back as bad as it was when I went to the hospital. They wanted to transfer me to another hospital and keep me there so I didn't stay, although I should've - I just don't have the time to be in the hospital, unfortunately.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I'm really intrigued since the Cipro seems like it was helping so much. I've wondered for a while if I might have an abscess, but what does the pain feel like? This is sort of a burning pain, with one localized tender area. Also, how are abscesses diagnosed if that's what it is? I've also thought of SIBO, because I also am extremely bloated all of the time.

Any ideas?

I go to see my doctor next Tuesday, but this is driving me crazy and I'm worried I may end up back in the hospital before then.

Thanks :)

When I had a SIBO I would get really bloated and gassy after I ate anything. Doc put me on 10 days of Cipro and I haven't had any problems since. I would be honest with your doc and tell them about how well you felt on the Cipro, and maybe he can put you on a short course and see if that improves things. Good luck!

By the way Valerie, it could also very well be an obstruction. Your symptoms point to that also. If the pain gets out of control, you are just going to have to put everything aside and get back to the hospital. I would hate for you to perforate or something else bad happen. Good luck and keep us posted.

A CT Scan could show if it is an abscess.

Hey guys, thanks so much for your replies. I just wanted to give you an update since I saw my GI yesterday. She gave me a 3 month prescription for Cipro and Flagyl, and she wants me to take those for now. I'm also going for CT enterography at a private clinic since it's like a one year long wait to get in to get one at the hospital! I don't think I'm obstructed, I'm still having BMs and passing gas, although I am more constipated than usual. It's taking up to 4 days for me to have a BM, which is really annoying. She thinks that it may not even be an abscess or anything, she said that in some patients, antibiotics just help (albeit she said usually in children, but I'm child sized, hahaha). Anyway, she said that if the CT enterography comes back normal and the antibiotics don't help, she's going to refer me to a chronic pain doctor. It's confusing because my tests have been improving ever since I got diagnosed in March, but it seems like I'm getting worse. My CRP went from around 110 down to 22 right now. Hopefully something works, because the pain is just brutal sometimes! I spent all of New Year's day in bed crying, I'm lucky I have a great boyfriend to take care of me though, the last few weeks have been really rough on me!

Update again, I started the Cipro and Flagyl last night and it seems like I'm already starting to feel better?? Just curious how quickly this combination has worked for others.

Thanks!

I have found that Cipro helps me, but usually with diarrhea not constipation. I also find probiotics to be helpful. Have you given them a try. It took me about 4-5 weeks before I noticed any change, but I really think the probiotics help my symptoms.

Which probiotics do you take? I've considered taking them but never actually gotten around to it. I'm thinking it might be a good time to start since the antibiotics are wiping out all my good bacteria too. It's funny because the antibiotics are giving me diarrhea now, go figure. I got my appointment for my CT enterography today, it's on Tuesday, which I find impressive, I was expecting to wait a couple of weeks. Hopefully it'll confirm what the problem is. I'm having a more pain today than I had yesterday, but nothing unbearable. The diarrhea doesn't bother me too much, if it is some sort of infection, I'm hoping it's just the bad stuff leaving my body or something. Not sure it if works that way though, haha.

Valerie I use Primadolphilis Reuteri by Natures Way. You really should be taking your probiotics two hours before or after your antibiotics especially now that you are on Flagyl and Cipro. I get my probiotics for about $8-9 for 30 caplets and you only have to take one a day. I get them in the refrigerated section at my local health food store. I also you stool softners nightly to help keep things soft and easier to pass. I take them at bedtime everynight. I think some of your pain could be from the stuck stool. Hope that helps.
