Has anyone had a Proctocelectomy?  I was wondering when they remove the rectum, do they always remove the colon?  My imagination is running away and I am scaring myself right now.  I have been having pain in the rectal area and in the last 2 years I have developed CD in the rectal area and it just keeps getting worse.  So of course I keep thinking that they are going to remove it..but from what I have been reading, the colon also comes out and they create a stoma in your abdomen.

Just wondering if anyone ever had another rectum created from the colon or if it is just impossable.

JavaJay~from my understanding 'colectomy' is the removal of the colon or part of it...so I think it would depend on your condition and where your disease is if they can leave most of your colon. I am not sure about where they can stop for the rectum, tho, and I've never heard of being able to 'relocate' the rectum. Those are some good questions for your C/R Surgeon (find the BEST one in your area or travel to one if you can!)

I did have a proctocolectomy (w/ileostomy) with the removal of my entire colon but I do know people who've had their rectum removed and now have a colostomy. There are some definite benefits to a colostomy (irrigation is one) depending on which part of the colon your stoma is formed from.

I would suggest asking your question on the Ostomies Forum, too (easy through 'quick jump')...there are many knowledgeable folks there!
