I've been trying the SCD diet for a week now, and I seem to be doing ok.  I was wondering if there is anything to drink besides water?  I have been drinking some fruit juices that say no sugar added.  Does that mean that it is SCD legal, or does every drink like orange juice and fruit juice have to be home made?

There are quite a few juices available now that are labelled "not from concentrate no sugar added",  these are the ones that you want to go for.   Sometimes the juice companies who make the concentrate add sugar, that is why you want to avoid juice that is made from concentrate.  Welch's makes a great Grape juice not from concentrate, and most grocery stores have apple juice in the tetra packs that are not from concentrate.  I think that Elaine Gottschall had to be very careful about that when the book was written (not much to choose from) - there are way more choices of 100% juice available now.
Have you had any problems sticking to the diet?  I hope it works for you - my 16 year old son has been on it for almost 6 months now.

the specific carbohydrate diet limits carbohydrates. limits carbohydrates (sugar) especially long sugars. With regard to the shorter sugars such as what is in juice, then the idea is to substitute honey and so this would be choosing another drink besides juice, So any drink that you want to add honey would avoid the carbohydrate sugars in juice.
also you know that Vitamin C is a laxative so juice is a laxative.

Thanks! I've only been on it for a week now, and I have had minor problems sticking to it. I have a small bite of things I shouldn't here and there, not that much though. It was really hard to give up pop, the headaches were horrible the first couple of days.

juices

Elaine said Apple Cider is OK if not from concentrate, no sugar, and no preservatives. Tropicana OJ (the original) is OK...I'm pretty sure Elaine vouched for it.

other goodies///

Stretch Island fruit leather, in response to my emailed question, assured me that the only thing in their fruit leather was dried fruit. (I had asked about the apricot fruit leather.)

Jennie's macaroons seem safe.

From what I understand, only the Apricot, Raspberry, and Grape flavors are legal.

SCD does not limit the amount of carbs, just the types of carbs. Monosaccharides (this includes 100% fruit juice) are legal. Disaccharides (sugar and lactose) and polysaccharides (starch and gluten) are not legal.

Thanks, Spookyhurst...I meant to say apricot, not apple, so will amend my post. I realize the www.digestivewellness.com site carries apricot, grape, and raspberry as "SCD" foods.

BUT, that said, this is the answer I got from Stretch Island, so I'm not sure the other Stretch Island fruit leathers are not OK (but might stick with apricot, grape, raspberry to be on the safe side):

"Hello Sheryl,

Thank you for emailing us about the fruit concentrate in our Fruit Leathers!

The fruit concentrate used in our products is all natural! So it's just fruit which has had the moisture removed from it. All of our products are 100% natural and contain no other chemical ingredients.

Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions you may have. We appreciate your interest in our company and products.

Fruitfully yours,
