The best place to get the correct information based on your medical history is from the doctor that prescribed it. If I were in your shoes, I would call the doc's office and ask the nurse to clarify with the doctor exactly how often to take the Lomotil. If it is  not possible to reach the doctor, then you could use information at reputable sites like this one: http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-6876-Lomotil.aspx?drugid=6876&drugname=Lomotil

When I took Lomotil, I started by taking ONE and seeing if my diarrhea slowed or stopped. Everyone reacts differently and I found I could quickly become constipated if I took too much Lomotil.

..it has some opiate like ingredients and therefore has some opiate like effect and therefore can be somewhat addictive ,,then since they also act like opiate they ,tend to slow down the bowel. The pills themselves are small in size but they did work for me with additional feeling of numbing the bowel ,although slight, i got some relief.

...generally this is a slight step above above loperamide which is mild. my opinion lomotil is in top 10 for giving some relief and when bathroom not nearby and if loperamide doesnt do anything. the script should indicate the dose, i.e. as needed . 1 small pill might last 3 hours if that helps..obviously there is some latitude as it was written. of course there can be different size pills etc. so check with doc if you want more specific dose.
