I havent had any alcohol for about 8 months now (since before i was officially diagnosed) but i seem to be doing alot better now and i'm doing well on my azathioprine.
My exams at uni finish (for a while) on fri, and so i am hoping to try a few drinks to see how i am with it!!
I won't go stupid and drink alot, nor will i drink anything like cider, or alcopops which i know are definately a bad idea!
I don't like wine, and so i was just wondering what else is there?!  do any of you have any "safe" drinks that you can handle?!  I like vodka etc, but not so sure going straight for the strong stuff is a good idea!!  Thanks for any advice!

I've never had a problem with a mixed drink. Rum & coke, vodka cranberry, etc. I just make sure to say far away from beer.
Diagnosed with CD July 2007

I can't drink beer on my diet and everything else is just not worth it to me. i loved beer!

If I were you I'd just try moderation and don't do anything that might make you feel like your relapsing.Once  I would drink a little too much and the next day I'd think "gosh, I could have felt this way for free if my crohn's were flaring!"

Bad fissure Feb 2005. Started Remicade 2006. Fissure #1 healed, now deal with smaller fissure that comes and goes. Clean scope 2009 except for fissure. Also on Pentasa.

i had a magarita other night from outback just 1 and i shared it as i was driving . and it was very sweet (brought me right to the tropics) lol. was absolutely awesome. anyways I occasionally drink beer< insert finger shaking smiley here>, cheers. I also looked up a pina colada and found out theres variations, and the vodka form of the pina coloda is a Chi Chi from that restaurant chain, anyways their margaritas are alot more sour. so I guess it depends on the mixologist lol but it [the margarita] was so tastey that i questioned if a pina coloda had been mixed prior to the margarita and if some had remained in the shaker.

I can't drink alcohol anymore because of IC, but as far as Crohn's was concerned, I could tolerate margaritas well enough. It only took one to make me feel tipsy anyway. I couldn't drink beer, and I can't drink wine because of a nice taste aversion after drinking too much of it one night.
Diagnosed with Crohn's in May of 2008.
Currently taking for Crohn's: Pentasa, omeprazole, Loestrin birth control, and Align probiotics.
Also taking Amitryptaline, hydroxizine, prosed DS, and hydrocodone for Interstitial cystitis.
I do keep a blog of my experiences and mishaps with these diseases. See profile :)

I have never been able to tolerate beer but the mixed drinks seem to go okay with me. I prefer kahlua and cream, amereto and gingerale (sounds not so good but it really is), ameretto and sour mix, and cherry coconut coladas. I o have to watch how much i conume but I don't seem to have issues with these drinks.

I've never been a huge fan of drinking, but I did have a drink or two on occasion before my diagnosis... since then I've only drank three times: once on my 19th birthday, once at a concert and once at my aunt's cottage...don't really miss it (I guess I'm just weird!) but I've found that beer does NOT agree with me at all but wine is fine, as are low sugar mixed drinks. Just stick to one or two drinks and if you're feeling okay it's probably fine!

Beer is bad (but I still drink it), wine isn't great for my gut either. If you can tolerate the hard stuff, I would go for that but probably not mix it with anything too sugary or carbonated. Good luck :P

don't do it... it really isn't worth it.

I was doing great until I decided to go nuts on new years eve...

Granted I had 2 beers, 3 whiskey sours, 2 shots of tequilla, some champagne, and 4 slices of pizza.....

Anyway that one night of "fun" twisted my guts up for 3 weeks.....

Did I overdue it? Yes, but before I went out I preached "moderation" to myself as well... Sometimes when you're drinking and having a good time you forget your problems, and just end up letting loose.

I am in college too so I know where you're coming from....

Remember that Alcohol itself is proven to cause inflammation.... There are no "safe" drinks unless they have alcohol. if you're going to go out, just order a virgin...

ok, so UC21 you were right :(
i was so sure i'd only have a couple of drinks on friday, but of course once i started, i didn't stop! i was full of excuses: end of exams, my housemate's 21st birthday etc...
yesterday i had a major hangover, but only a slightly loose stool and a little bit of lower right sided pain. today i woke feeling fine, and then about an hour and a half ago i had a very loose stool n then half an hour after that i was back on the toilet having ALOT of diarrhoea! and i dont think i'm done for the night yet either! :( i know this is totally my fault.... do u guys think it'll turn into a proper flare, or could it just be a one off?! thanks

I'm in remission but even so a heavy drinking sesh brings on diarrhoea - even non-Crohnies ofren suffer with their tums the next day a lot. Whenever I drink I always have a carb-rich meal before hand, take extra diarrhoea meds and the following day keep it basic - tea and toast only pretty much.
Hopefully its just a one-off and not a flare, hope you feel better soon.

Pina Colada's rip me apart but oh man they are so good going down. lol I had a few last night at a friends
house and boy am I paying for it today. I am not a big drinker though so it doesn't happen often. It
is my favorite drink though. lol Rum and cokes usually are safe for me and wine doesn't seem to
bother me but again not a huge wine person either so dont have very often. I don't like beer so not
sure how I am with that.

I can't really drink carbonated drinks (the gas), plus anyway, I hate the taste of beer! And before I became really sick with crohnes, I had a bad experience with bourbon.... *shudders*.

As such, I stick to the spirits, preferably clearish spirits (minimises the hangovers too!).

Over the last year or so I have been drinking pineapple juice with vodka, midori and malibu in it. Tastes great and doesn't make me sick at all! (unless I drink too much :p ). Oh and shots.... lots and lots of shots! :p

I do not think it will cause you to flare, but I think you will probably have a rough few days. JMHO
