How many of you cd'ers experience hair loss - enough to need to clean your brush out every other day?
- Diagnosed Nov 08' but undiagnosed for 13 years prior with no major problems
- First major flare Aug-Sep 09 - I attribute it to intolerance to meds and crappy GI
- Perianal abscess - EUA with drainage and Seton put in
- Meds: Flagyl & Remicade to start January 14/10

When I was at my sickest, I lost probably 70% of my hair and I looked awful. The shower drain was clogged just about every day and I ended up getting an extreme hair cut to try to hide how thin it had become. The shedding continued for about 6 months and only slowed down once I was feeling better. It's probably back to 90% of what it was now (thank goodness). My advice would be to take good vitamins and massage your scalp to try to stimulate new growth.
CD since July 2007 - prenatal vitamins + extra vit. D, vit. C and iron, fish/flax oil, probiotics

Following excellent Omega-3 diet as per James Scala's 'The New Eating Right for the Bad Gut' - got me out of a flare.

Yep, I've got some hair loss issues right now. Likely from being on pentasa before, to a round of pred (still tapering down) and starting on imuran. I get lots of hair in the sink everyday... blahhh!

That happened to me - lots of hair all around my hairline - prob from losing 40 lbs in a matter of 6 weeks and the hormonal imbalance.  It is similar to what pregnant women go through so rest assured it is common and although it sucks, it will grow back.  i wore lots of headbands and took Biotin as a supplement.

Good luck!!

Yuppers...trying everything. Nioxin system, making sure I take my zinc, make sure I take my jello. I am so lucky that I had such thick hair to start. I've lost more than 2/3 in the last couple of years. And it comes out at the root. I even lose eyelashes, eyebrows. The upside is that I don't have to shave my legs...a likely culprit in my scenario is the Cimzia. about a week from injection, I will lose lots of hair in the shower...in the sink...walking...sitting...hair is all over the house Eewwwww!

Ughh, not only hair loss, but change in texture. My hair is soooo limp and gets oily very quickly after I wash it. I just hope it'll go back to normal some day ;-)

Between the disease itself and the meds we take, hairloss is a common complaint. Many have found some success adding Folic Acid and if you can tolerate it, some Biotin to help slow the hair loss. Good luck!

I used to lose a lot of hair, even when I didn't use any Crohns medicines, now, how strange is that? Is it common to lose a lot of hair due to the disease itself?

Beesting I think that hairloss even in the absence of medicine in this disease can be triggered by the rapid weight loss many of us experience (like when anorexic people get thinning hair because they are not taking in enough calories).

I lost quite a bit and now have 2 inch new growth fuzz all over (mostly around my hair line and part). For a while there was hair everywhere. It comes and goes with me. Hope it gets better.
Diagnosed with Crohns in 1998. Been on and off pred, entocort, immuran, asacol. Currently on Remicade every 8 weeks and gotten off all other medications!! *currently in remission*

I'm glad I had a thick head of hair as well. I've noticed a difference in my hair texture since my first remicade treatment last Thursday. I don't have to wash it twice a day anymore - but the hair itself still feels dead. I do hope that now I have the remicade in my system my hair will start to rejuvenate.

I lost tons of hair while on Humira, but I have lots of hair so it wasn't noticeable to anyone but me and my drain =)

That went away when I got the Humira out of my system.

I haven't really lost hair. I know where it is. In the bath drain, comb and sink. Trouble is its no longer rooted to my head. I'm not that alarmed though as I was ugly before and this just diverts peoples eyes more skyward. I find that the most difficult thing to deal with is the fact that there is enough left up there to make sunscreen a mess to apply but not enough to prevent sunburn. I never liked wearing hats but now they are a necessity . One question really bothers me though. Why is all the loss on top of my head ? I have not lossed anywhere else, in fact I seem to have more in my ears and my beard is growing like mad. Guess this is the price for a chance to have somewhat of a better life...

Lost hair around hairline (looks thinning) after acute flare and no nutrution for two weeks ... I just part my hair differently. I like the hairband idea!

Not only have I been losing a lot of hair, it just doesn't style the same and it really doesn't grow much.  My hair dresser is wonderful and tries to always make me feel better, but she seems to think it is from all the meds.  She said that the meds are very harsh because they generally tend to come out through your hair.  You would think everything else that we go through would be enough, huh?

I have always had that problem. Way befor I was diagnosed with Crohn's. I actually have Alopecia Areata and have two bald spots on my head that I cover with neighboring hair (lol). With Alopecia Areata, hair is supposed to fall out and ususally grows back, but mine hasn't grown back in two years.
