OK, I know that BMs never smell good, but I have the most foul smelling D I've ever had. Is it normal if you're in a flare? I was tested for C. Diff, but it came back negative. Could there be some other bug that is making it smell so bad, or is it just from the inflammation? I just didn't have it like this when I was first diagnosed.

No its probably just the Crohns inflammation you are experiencing causing the foul smell. I know when I am flaring my stools smell REALLY bad. Good luck!

Thanks, Nanners. Just checking. I am seriously embarrassed to go to the bathroom in public. I feel bad for anyone who has to be subjected to that.

I eat fresh papaya that takes my foul smell away completly, and I thought mine the worst in the world, now I don't have to be embarrased when I go to public bathrooms, it changed my life, also my gas was equallyas foul now when I pass gas it is odorless. revelation to me. papaya have natural digestive ensymes in them. I call them my miracle med.

Taking probiotics can help too. I was having really bad smelling gas and the probiotics helped a ton. But sometimes it is just what I ate and until it is out of me things are going to stink.

Do you notice it more during your periods?

:)
bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Artist guy,I don't think I can eat fresh papaya right now, because I'm in a serious flare, but I will keep that in mind if I ever reach remission again.

Zanne, Good to know. I was eating yogurt for my probiotics, but I am giving up dairy for right now to see if it helps.

pb4, unfortunately, I've only had my period once in the last 6 months, so no connection there.

I actually can tell my state of health by smell. I find that no smell and horrible smell are both indication of trouble in my case. I have lost most of my sense of smell lately though so it is more difficult to tell. What a brave topic to post. :)

I carry a small gas powered scented spray for those really bad smell times. blushSo embarrasing to use someones toilet and leave it smelling so bad. Especially the ones without fans!smhair OMG

In my experience (and I have far more experience with c-diff than I care to have), c-diff has a chemical smell to it. Very foul, doesn't smell like poo at all though.
CD since July 2007 - prenatal vitamins + extra vit. D, vit. C and iron, fish/flax oil, probiotics

Following excellent Omega-3 diet as per James Scala's 'The New Eating Right for the Bad Gut' - got me out of a flare.

since were all coming clean, I have (not anymore) ordered special underware that baggie style that has a liner with a charcoal filter that when you cut the cheese in public it filteres the smell. but if you have really foul smelling gas like I used to I would buy 6 filters at a time. seriously, I found them on line. not cheap either. now that I was turned on to the power of natural digestive enzyme of papaya I can fart away inpublic and no worries. public bathrooms, as well no fears anymore

do you have kids because if you do you can blame the smell on them, lol. I hear you the older you get the more you will not care as much and after childbirth you wont care as much. My bro doesn't have cd and he can clear a room you have to try & find the humor in it. Like men are always trying to give women dutch ovens, now you can laugh because you could kill them silent, but deadly, lol. See I just made a joke into something gross & embarrassing it helps with the awkwardness just be carefull not to shart, lol Ok I hope I didnt go overboard

ASHYLA03. What you really need isn't kids it's a bulldog. My dog could seriously compete with me and it was hysterical to see my wife or kids try to figure out who the culprit was. Louie, my bulldog, is gone now and I am older so like you said I care less each year who is offended mentally or olfactatorially. How do you spell THAT for crying out loud

I've had a few accidents, and since then I've never trusted any fart, when a fart is close to it's entrance, I am already sitting at a comfortable place waiting.

I think that the foul smell often is due to some food I have been eating. I have now, since X-mas, stopped eating ordinary wheat products and wheat flour, because I am thinking I may have a gluten sensitivity or maybe a wheat sensitivity. It was typical to have diarrhea or normal bm's with a foul smell. A couple of days after changing to gluten free diet, my diarrhea dissapeared, and gradually I have reduced the intake of grain products.

A week ago I cheated. I ate a few regular wheat muffins. And had regular pasta for dinner. Some hours after dinner I had really bad smelling farts, the morning after I had diarrhea, had to go to the bathroom 3 -4 times. I ofcourse changed my diet again, and the diarrhea is gone, so are the smelly farts. My gluten free/reduced carbs experience is going on for 3 months, so it's still early days. Anyway, this is interesting, I think. /Bee
