cry So I haven't posted in a long time cause my heath has really been detaerarating,,I was in the hospital for 3 and a half months with reapeated bowel ob structions,I was given IV fluids through my port a cath and of course the dreaded NG tube 2 drain the contents of the stomach cause each time I was throwing up stool great ah not!!!!So before all this happened I had a double balloon dilatation which was really painful and lasted 4 about 2 months without another obstuction now I got 3 narrowings in the bowel and not enough bowel left 2 operate but the surgeons in the city think the only way 2 end these obstuctions is 2 operate which in the end would leave me with short bowel I don't want that cause the chance of surival is low meaning I could live fro anywhere between 6 and 8 months,so I would rather live with these bowel obstructions even though the pain is so severe at least I'm still alive. So on Thursday I went 2 the city 4 my next double balloon dilatation and took Pico Salax and couldn't move my bowels @ all my belly was enoromus looked like I was 9 months expecting and the pain was so bad than I started vomiting up stool first the coffee grounds than the actually stool I'm so exhausted @ this point and was going to go the ER but I figured I would wait till  morning so I called my GI first thing and she said come over and we will give u more laxitives and do the test this afternoon I guess they don't understand how bad the pain of an obstruction really is,so I came home in the middle of a blizzard and I'm still in a lot of opain and my bowels r still not working but the vomiting has stopped thank god...So I guess I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience with the Pico Salax the first 4 times I took it I got along fine however this time was a disaster what next...My family doctor just swiched my pain meds from Dilauid to Fentyla I'm not sure of the spelling and it isn't even coming close 2 killing some of the pain..So I'm going 2 wait 2 c how u guys got along with it before going back to the hospital yet again I hope this time my hospital stay is cut down 2 half the time as last year I don't think I can put in another 3 and a half months...So your feed back would help me wonders thank you 4 reading this long post but I tried 2 fit everything in....Thanks again Jenn Stuck In Nova Scotia With An Extreme Blockage...HELP HELP HELP cry cry cry

I can't answer your question, I have not had Pico Salax. But what I wanted to ask is about the short bowel syndrome. My mom had SBS. (She had CD and multiple resections) She had a Medium Chain Fatty Acid that she had to take on a daily basis to maintain her weight. This went on for years. While she was under weight, for sure, she was not on the verge of death, and it was not CD that caused her death. The MCFA was a bit nasty on its own, but it could be added to recipes like muffins or such so that you didn't just have to take a teaspoon of oil. Have your doctors mentioned anything like this to you? Is anything like this an option for you? Can you get any assistance from the Canadian Crohn's foundation in finding some up and coming doctor who wants to make their mark with a really difficult case?

Sending you best wishes and I hope you don't have to spend another long time in the hospital.

Managing with strict low residue diet, keeping symptoms to a minimum. All test show small amount of ulceration, still have occasional blockages. But still have a great time with my 2 daughters and husband!

I took Pico Salax once when I had an obstruction. I had a similar experience, it was a total nightmare, I was sure I was going to die. I didn't go to the hospital because I didn't think I could make it, but it was the worst pain I've ever gone through for a good 8 hours or so. You're really not supposed to be going any sort of prep if you think you have an obstruction. I told my doctor that I thought I had an obstruction before I took the prep and she didn't believe me and told me to take it anyway (this was prior to my diagnosis). All that I have to say is I'm lucky I didn't perforate. I get really nervous every time I do preps now, I always worry that it'll happen again.

You might also want to check out Randynoguts website. He posts here regularly, so you should be able to find him, he's very inspiring. He's been on TPN for over a decade I believe.

My mom started having resections long before doctors understood CD and the long term ramifications of taking out too much bowel. She had tons cut out. I do have some of her medical records but not all of them, so I am not able to piece it all together to figure out exactly how much. But my disease has closely mirrored hers except that mine was diagnosed when I was 10 years younger.

I do hope that you can find some relief and some help.

Hi Jen,

Sorry to be a nitpicker here, but could you please go into the control panel and modify your signature. Its causing the forum to go wide and makes the posts hard to read. Thanks for your understanding.

I sure hope they can get your bowels moving better and you get feeling better soon.

Hugs
